the Pier is a experimental film of Science-fiction of Chris Marker, left in 1962 and one 28 minutes duration.

Description

This Film, regarded as a Masterpiece per many criticisms and of realizers (in particular Terry Gilliam), is in fact a “picture story” or Diaporama: assembly of photographs in Black and white with a single Narrator and a band carried out by Trevor Duncan. That gives to this very singular account strong poetic contents and is used to represent a face of the “Réalité”: the memories which one has one moment of his life partial, are truncated and when a photo album is looked at, the memories come in the disorder with “jumps in time”.

Synopsis

The history begins with Paris, after the “third world war” and the nuclear destruction of all the surface of the Ground. The hero is the guinea-pig of scientists who seek to restore a temporal corridor in order to allow to the men future to change time. He was selected because of his very good visual memory: he keeps an image very strong and present of an event lived during his Enfance, at the time of a walk with his mother on the pier of the Aéroport of Orly.

Around film

  • This film inspired the Army of the twelve monkeys of Terry Gilliam, the Shivers of the anguish of Dario Argento and strongly marked Mamoru Oshii. This last explicitly made there reference in its very first film, The Red Spectacles , at the time of the final scene on the pier.
  • the film is only made up of photographs, except for one only plan, the time of some blinkings of eyelids.
  • the Pier was inspired by Cold sweats ( Vertigo ) of Alfred Hitchcock, several sequences refer explicitly there -   in particular that with the tree trunk symbolizing Time. Terry Gilliam is even more conclusive in the Army of the twelve monkeys by integrating the original scene of the tree trunk symbolic system of Vertigo projected in a cinema. Cold sweats is itself the film adaptation of the detective novel Among deaths , of the duet of French writers Boileau-Narcejac, published in 1954.
  • the information center on the short-measuring of the town of Clermont-Ferrand is called “the Pier” in homage to this film.
  • the Pier is the name of a bar in Tokyo, in homage to Chris Marker. One spends there a few seconds at the time of Without Sun , like in the film Tokyo Ga of Wim Wenders: Chris Marker, which is turning Without Sun , there is present, but hides behind a drawing of cat.
  • Jump They Say of David Bowie, contains a scene where Bowie is lengthened on an armchair with a mask on the eyes, and referring to explicitly the Pier .
