  • the commune of Pessac on the Dordogne is created the August 3rd, 1807 . It is Charles Emmanuel Dupuch de Montbreton who becomes the first mayor. But he will quickly be resigned (on December 21st, 1807) with the reason which he is former deputy of the nobility and former emigrant.

It is Charles Durège who replaces it then.

the Gabare S sail on the river, bringing the wood of Corrèze towards Libourne and Bordeaux for the manufacture of the wine barrels and the stakes of vines ( let us carassons ).
In the other direction, the barges charged with goods and materials go up the river drawn by oxen on the tow path, sometimes Right Bank, sometimes left bank, according to the currents.
Pessac is an essential halt on the Dordogne where freight is exchanged between barges able to sail on the high Dordogne and its high funds, and more corpulent barges adapted better during the low Dordogne, of the Estuaire of the Gironde and being able to go up the the Garonne to Bordeaux.
the local productions (food products, wines) and the travellers borrow the service of the barges to go up or descend the river. Before the creation of the railway line Libourne - Bergerac, the Dordogne is true the axis of communication of the area. (cf the river hope , CH. Signol ED. R. Laffont 1990).
many boatmen resident in Pessac on the Dordogne. One of the last is Albert Sandaran who ceases his activity after the Second world war. This owner gabarier was one of the first to install engines on his boats, which gave him an advantage vis-a-vis the other owners: three return tickets Pessac - Bordeaux in one week against only one for its competitors.
  • Pessac is also a not passage between two banks of the Dordogne. Between Castillon-the-Battles and Holy-Foy-the-Large, one counts Sept.
of it has Pessac, the ford and the vat is about with the site of the current bridge. About 1910, it is a abonnataire which obtained the right-of-way. He warns the customers by public posting in front of his pontoon: of “ a person with horse = 15 centimes ” with “ a sheep or a ewe = 1 centime ½ ”.
  • the law of the 10 Vendémiaire, year 4 (October 2nd 1795) obliges the Communes to count the population (names, first names, ages, professions, places of dwelling and communal origins).
a register dating from the Révolution (but unfortunately not dated with precision) counts the 630 inhabitants of more than 12 years, men and women.
This register also counts the professions occupied by the household heads. One can see there the importance of the river in the distribution of the trades and the number of families that the Dordogne, the barges and the wine made live at the time. (Document pleasantly lent by F. and F. PIGANEAU)
