Comments
Many polemics surround this film. The principal one relates to its possible Antisémitisme. It began when the project of scenario of film started to circulate. The role of the Jewish priests in film is very important in the Torture then the execution of Christ. It is them which raise crowd, to push Pontius Pilate to torture then crucifier Christ. Pontius Pilate is presented like a simple executant, who does not show himself favorable to the Crucifixion of Christ, but is made pass the concern of the law and order in priority. At the time of the distribution of film, Mel Gibson has many times declared that it was not anti-semite and that it made any possible sound most accurately to retranscribe possible the Évangile S with the screen.
Various Jewish personalities are assembled besides to the crenel to defend Gibson, of which David Klinghoffer in the New Yorkean Jewish review Forward and Barbara Amiel in the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph , in addition to the main actor.
The letter of the Gospels is respected (languages used in film being however the Latin and the Araméen, while the Gospels are written in Greek), although the film shows a more carnal Passion and less sulpician that turned by another scenario writer, Pier Paolo Pasolini in the film the Gospel according to saint Matthieu , who claims himself some too.
The second polemic relates to the choice to very show the scene of torture of the realistic Christ of way . One can see Christ there tortured during several minutes by the Romain S in an extremely violent way. The Standing Committee for information and the communication, body of the Conference of the bishops of France, as well as many people, condemned this violence which they consider free. They judge that these scenes would transmit in the second plan the message of love which Christ would have tried to make pass, to make rather of it a kind of film gore - besides certain film enthusiasts defend film for its purely cinematographic qualities and the talent of realization of Gibson.
For their part, the leading authorities of the Roman Catholic church, principal judges as regards respect of the catholic dogmas, did not emit of unfavourable criticism on the bottom against this film. Among the French-speaking bishops recommending the vision of this film, one can quote the bishop of Valves and that of Namur.
One can also note the brief but explicit comment of Jean-Paul II: It is ace it was (" It is as that which that is passé" , i.e. he regards the version of film as historically correct), and the fact that he accepted in audience the main actor, Jim Caviezel and his family, a few weeks after the exit of film.
The third polemic relates to the freedoms taken with the History. Mel Gibson has as of the desired beginning to make its film entirely in Araméen (the language of Christ) and in Latin. Some historians declare that at that time, the language of communication between the communities would not have been according to them Latin, but the old Greek . In film, the nails are inserted in the palms but one generally agrees to say that at the time of a Crucifiement, the nails were inserted in the wrists, which avoided tearing the flesh. It also seems that Christ did not carry the entirety of her cross, as it is shown in film, but only the Patibulum (horizontal beam), the vertical part being probably already on the spot.
