The Old Dead Tree

Presentation

The Old Dead Tree is a French group based on Paris which in the broad sense fits in the Gothic kind Metal. They however have a single style and very rich person who is clean for them. Their style approaches Death Metal Progressive.

Biography

The group was formed in 1997. It is initially made up of:

  • Manual Munoz - song and guitar (and lyric writer)
  • Vincent Danhier - low
  • Nicolas Chevrollier - guitar and choruses
  • Frederic Guillemot - battery

First demonstration: the discovery

  • It is thanks to their own-produced demonstration of 4 titles, entitled The Blossom (1999), as with the talented concerts which followed, TODT starts to be made known in the medium of metal. And it is not without merit, since this group is equipped with undeniable qualities. Indeed, the production is of very good quality, the first title plunges us in an atmosphere where the instruments present to us a heavy sound with guitars saturated which pass from slow rates/rhythms to frantic rates, without leaving side the melodies which remain very important in their music. As for the voice, one feels it worked and varied since Manuel often passes from the song guttural to the clear song, and its vocal stamp cannot leave marble. The compositions presented in this demonstration are worked and original, nothing is left randomly; one perceives that they were lengthily considered before being approved like final version. It is understood quickly that the facility is not the watchword. In each piece is always a perpetual evolution, there is very little exact repetition, so that one is not bored there only one second. It is the case in " besides; It' S the same for everyone" who lasts 8 minutes 25.

The Blossom - 4 titles - 22:46 min

  1. It' S the same for everyone

  2. The dark missionary
  3. Chained to life
  4. Last sigh

However, the dream turns short following the tragic suicide of the beater in August 1999, event that none the members of TODT could anticipate, nor to even imagine. That however does not reach the rise of the group which sees itself from now on more welded than ever.

First album: the revelation

  • It is in the spirit of this drama that they compose their first album: The Nameless Disease (2003), Franck Sharecropper replacing beater then. Thus, all the pieces are dedicated to Frederic, and the words (always in English) treat suffering felt by the members of the group that with caused the death, as well as a feeling of anger against them not to have even been able to see the distress of their friend.

Meanwhile, TODT signs with the label Season off Mist in 2002. This album sublimates the atmosphere which the listener can foresee in the demonstration which preceded. It is all the more touching and deep that it is animated by the loss to be it expensive. The melodies prove to be effective and subtle, and the album east impresses at the same time variety and of homogeneous continuity by keeping environments which are woven throughout the 11 titles. Moreover, Manuel progressed also much in song and now apprehends it with much more ease, which feels in a positive way on scene.

The group becomes more and more appreciated and more and more required. In 2004, Franck leaves the group, the situation agreeing to him more. He is replaced by Foued Moukid (Arkan), the current beater. The group continues the concerts and takes part in some festivals in particular in 2005 (Furyfest…).

Second album: the confirmation

  • Their second album, The Perpetual Motion (2005) is somewhat different in environment while remaining faithful musicalement to it with what always accustomed us TODT. Thus, it is placed in continuity of its predecessor, but with an expressive widening. It is however difficult to exceed the musical level of The Nameless Disease .

One can still see them there in round a little everywhere in Europe, more and more frequently as a head of poster. This stage, the group already played with several groups like Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Opeth, Samael, Leaves' Eyes or Epica. They are also asked in festivals such as the Wave Gothic Treffen in Germany or the Metal Therapy in France. A few weeks before a concert with the Engine in Paris, Nicolas announces that it leaves the group, not without difficulties or regrets, but it makes the choice be devoted to its family life. It is Gilles Moinet (of Lux Incerta) who will take his place with the guitar and the choruses. The current line up is then joined together.

Third album: the continuation

  • Their third album, heading The Toilets Fields , left on September 7th, 2007. The group always plays in the same register, it does not move away too much from what it had undertaken with The perpetual motion . One can still note an improvement in the voice of Handbook, it excels more as ever as well in the death parts as clear.

However, very little time after the exit of the album, Foued announces its departure of the group to full-time deal with different sound project, Arkan. While waiting to find a beater full-time, it is Raphaël Antheaume, beater of session, which will replace it for the round.
