The Northern Marianna Islands of North

The the Northern Marianna Islands of North belong to the archipelago of the Mariannes in the Pacific Ocean, in the north of Guam.

They form a the American Commonwealth, in partnership with the the United States of which it is a not-built-in organized territory.

History

The first European to have approached these islands was Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, which visited Guam and claimed these grounds for the Spain. The bombers transporting the atomic bombs bound for Hiroshima and Nagasaki started from Tinian. The archipelago was managed by the United States like part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, statute granted by the the United Nations, with defense and the foreign affairs under American control.

The people of Mariannes decided not to seek independence but to approach more the guardian power. An agreement establishing a the Commonwealth was approved in 1975. The constitution and the new government came into effect in 1978. The September 23rd 2004, the member of the Congress Richard Pombo (California) proposed the proposal H.R. 5135 - the Northern Mariana Islands Delegate Act . If this proposal became law (reintroduced on February 18th 2005 under new a n° H.R. 873), it would make it possible the Northern Mariana Islands to elect a delegate without right to vote with the American congress, as from the elections of 2006.
