Comment

The film takes again the screen of Rio Bravo of Howard Hawks. If the film can seem out-of-date with certain, it preserves a single and very strange atmosphere which brings a certain credibility to him. Following the example other films with microphone-budget of the Sixties and seventies, the Night of death-alive the remains a cinematographic UFO to look at absolutely in its context. These are undoubtedly the scenes shock and disputed which made the success of film, with the image of the scene where a little girl, transformed into zombie, his/her father devours before killing his mother.

The film is also marked by the political convictions of the author. The main actor is a young Afro-American: rare thing for the time. It should not indeed be forgotten that the segregation was still of setting to the the United States one year before. This choice of Romero (even if the realizer always denied to have engaged Duane Jones for his skin color) is still reinforced by the fate reserved to the hero which must undergo, in addition to attacks of zombies, the attacks of his/her racist comrades. Only survivor, it will be killed by the police force at the end of film and will be exposed as a hunting trophy. Moreover, the attack of the zombies was also interpreted like a metaphor of the Guerre of Vietnam.

Thus, the Night of death-alive the , behind a rough and simple intrigue, is a political film, like other films of Romero (for example Zombie , critical of the consumer society).

Following a negligence concerning its rights of exploitation, the Night of death-alive the since definitively fell into the public domain.

Three continuations were undertaken by George Romero: Zombie (1978), the Day of death-alive the (1984) and the Territory of dead the (2005).

A remake of film was carried out in 1990 by Tom Savini, celebrates specialist in the special effects of make-up and usual collaborator of G.A. Romero.
