The NewYork Times

The NewYork Times , shortened in NY Times or NYT , is a Quotidien New Yorkean. They are one most prestigious of the newspapers American. Newspaper of reference of the American liberal left, it has, to date, rewarded by 90 Prix Pulitzer. In 2006, it employs: 1200 journalists.

Since 1967, the NewYork Times Company is shareholder of the International Herald Tribune . Since 2003 and the withdrawal of the Washington Post Company which publishes the Washington Post , it is the single shareholder.

The newspaper French Le Monde publishes each week a selection of articles of the NewYork Times in original version.

History of the newspaper

The NewYork Times was founded the September 18th 1851 by Henry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones. (Henry Raymond will be also one of the directors founder of the Associated Press in 1856). The NewYork Times is a daily newspaper since its foundation, but the editions of Sunday began only after the American Civil War. The newspaper gains its first Prix Pulitzer for its follow-up of the events of the First World War in 1918. In 1919, the newspaper achieves its first delivery Transatlantique, with London. In 1942, the newspaper starts to publish cross Mots daily and launches the chain of classical music WQXR, which is today one of largest and prestigious of the New Yorkean area.

In 1946, NY Times introduces a section mode and launches an international edition (stopped in 1967 during the resumption of the International Herald Tribune , an international newspaper published in co-operation by the NewYork Times and the Washington Post with Paris). The section COp-ED appeared starting from 1970. COp-ED in English refers to the page of leading articles written by journalists of the newspaper rather than the team of edition. It publishes articles of independent writers daily. The online version of the newspaper is launched in 1996, the readers of the whole world can reach the most recent articles free.

The NewYork Times gave its support for the democratic candidates at the time of the five last presidential elections (1988, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004).

At the time of the municipal elections of 2005 with New York, it gave its support for the republican liberal Michael Bloomberg against the democratic candidate Fernando Ferrer.

The newspaper comprises three principal sections, each one containing several sub-sections:

New (English: News )

Included sections dedicated to the international news, the new main roads, the businesses, technology, sciences, health, the sports, the New Yorkean area, education, time, and the advertisements obituary.

Opinion

Included pages dedicated to the leading articles, COp-ED and with the letters addressed to the drafting.

Supplements

Included sections which relate to arts, the literature, the cinema, the theater, the voyages, a guide of the town of New York, the restaurants and the wines, the house and decoration and the drawings. The newspaper publishes also a weekly review and a section entitled Week in Review . Sunday appears the NewYork Times Best Seller list , prestigious list of Best-seller S.

Price

The NewYork Times received 90 Prix Pulitzer, the most prestigious price for the American journalism, decreed annually by the Université Columbia in New York. In the year 2002, the newspaper gained a record number of 7 prices.

The NYT , George W. Bush and Judith Miller

In June 2004, the newspaper published a leading article in which the drafting admits having disseminated information without checking them sufficiently, and even false news by making confidence with the furnished informations by the administration of the president George Walker Bush within the framework of the preparation of the war against the Iraq of spring 2003. Five of the six articles blamed were signed or cosignés by Judith Miller.

This journalist, regarded one to defer without scruples according to one or as the champion of the Freedom of expression according to the others, had preferred to be imprisoned during the summer 2005 rather than to compromise his sources in the Affaire Lime-Wilson (concerning the escapes which made it possible to reveal the identity of an agent of the CIA).

Held during 85 days, it received the support of its drafting during its detention, in particular that of Arthur Sulzberger Jr, the owner of the NYT. But, since its release, she was repudiated publicly as well by the persons in charge of the drafting as by her fellow-members journalists of the NYT, estimating that she had not been honest in connection with her sources, causing dissensions within the drafting of the daily newspaper, spread out in the columns of the New Yorkean daily newspaper.

Thus three writers depicted Miller like a “sower of Zizanie”, whereas in email with the personnel, the director of the drafting estimated that it seemed “to have misled” the person in charge of the office of the NYT in Washington, which it contradicts.

In a leading article, chroniqueuse the Maureen Dowd does not hesitate to describe it as “woman of massive destruction” and denounces its lack of understanding when it had relayed the assertions of the White House on the existence of weapons of massive destruction in Iraq.

The newspaper then makes rest on Miller her lack of rigor in its cover of the pre-war period in Iraq.

The business Jayson Blair

In 2003, one of the young journalists of NY Times , Jayson Blair, had invented and plagiarized several articles. He had been laid off training with him his two editor associations.
