the Neuville-on-Scheldt is a common French, located in the department of the Northern and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

History

  • years 1890: Jules Margerin transforms the mill on the the Scheldt into powerplant. The Neuville-on-Scheldt will be thus probably one of the first communes of electrified France.
  • very hard Occupation under the First World War.
  • 1964: the Scheldt is widened to let pass the barges borrowing the channel from large gauge between Valencian and Usinor machines it Dunkirk.

Personalities related to the commune

  • Arthur Lamendin : Trade unionist

  • Jules Margerin (1837-1920), doctor and contractor. It transforms the mill on the Scheldt, inherited its Leriche in-laws, in powerplant (this before 1895). The Neuville-on-Scheldt is thus probably one of the first communes of France to being electrified. The mill, destroyed in 1918, is rebuilt. It will be definitively destroyed during the widening of the Scheldt to connect the Usinor factory of Dunkirk (1964).

Raphaƫl Lardeur was born on December 19th, 1890 in Neuville on the Scheldt. It is a painter and glass maker who in particular constructed certain stained glasses of the church of the commune, but it is especially known for the realization of the stained glasses of the basilica of Thonon the Baths and the church of Valencians.
