Geography

Situation

Neuville is located at 17 kilometers in the north of Lyon in the Val of the Saone, on left bank of the the Saone which determines its western edge. Bordered in the east by a sloping relief, a small valley gives access to the Côtière of the Dombes (301 meters of altitude). While coming from north, Neuville forms a bottleneck between the Talus of the plate of Dombes and the Monts of Gold, thus closing the alluvial plain in which the Saone runs. It is quite naturally at this place that a bridge makes it possible to cross the river.

Communications

Neuville, commune of the Large Lyon, is mainly connected to the regional metropolis by the road of the edge of the Saone (D433), which enters to Lyon by the district of Canary, where it crosses the Trunk road 6 at the entry of the tunnel under theRusset-red one. With the local traffic is superimposed an important traffic between Lyon and the south Beaujolais, which crosses the Saone in Neuville, causing serious obstructions. D51, on Right Bank, and the highway A46, which passes slightly to the north of the commune, partly lighten the strong traffic of this axis.

Public transport serves the commune abundantly: lines TCL n° 40 worms Lyon-Fisheries, 43 worms Genay and Lyon-Vaise, 70 worms Share-God, 90 worms Perrache, 84 towards Vaise by Poleymieux, 97 worms Montanay and Saint-Germain-with-Mount-with Or; departmental lines 184 worms Trévoux and Ars, and 260 worms Villefranche.

The Paris railway - Lyon passes to Villevert, on Right Bank of the Saone, to one kilometer of the bridge of Neuville. The old station of Neuville, from which the trains left towards Cross-Russet-red the, is closed, but the line is not given up, and its reopening with the passenger traffic is considered.

History

It appears certain that the current site of Neuville was inhabited in prehistoric times. The proof is given to us by it by the polished stone axes which were found in the grounds neuvilloises; like by the eight hanging ones in bone of the Neolithic time of a collar found in a calcareous Pouding in 1871 by a 15 year old boy close to the bridge of Neuville.
Before the arrival of the Romains there existed in Neuville a grouping of Gaulois. It is probable that these inhabitants belonged to the important tribe of the Ségusiaves, made up farmers who occupied the country until the conquest of César. The proof of the presence of these Gallic is brought by the discovery in July 1963 of a Gallic cemetery at the time of the excavations carried out for the construction of an allotment to Monteiller. This cemetery is composed of many parallel tombs; the bodies there are laid out vis-a-vis the west and are placed in a kind of stone punts coffin covered with a stone punt without sculpture.
Parts with the effigy of Marc-Aurèle and Commode were found in Tatière, which makes it possible to affirm that the place was inhabited by Romans about the year 200.
The decline of the Roman Empire and the weakening of its power which resulted from this made it possible the Burgondes to settle in the West of the the Rhine. In 443, the emperor Honorius their allowed to be established in the Sapaudia , future Savoy, between Geneva and Grenoble. Little by little, without violence, being made grant part of the grounds by the Indigenous S, they widen their field with all the valley of the Saone. Our small town became a stronghold burgonde.
In 534, the kingdom burgonde is divided between wire of Clovis, then integrated into the Kingdom Mérovingien into 679, attached to the Lotharingie into 842, with the kingdom of Arles into 933. “Without king, duke and prince”, according to the formula of Pierre the Worthy one, abbot of Cluny, the Lyonnais was the object of ceaseless fights between the counts (of Lyon, Beaujeu, of Drill) and the archbishops of Lyon, until the final annexation by the king of France in 1320 (Traité of Vienna).
After the Peace of Arras (1435), disorders persisted. The village was shaved by " écorcheurs". Charles VII restores the ordre.
The small strengthened borough, then named Vimy , took importance in 1630 when Camille de Neufville de Villeroy, archbishop of Lyon, there bought the property of Ombreval , of which it made a sumptuous residence (castle, hunting lodge, nymphée, etc). It also made there build, on its own sums of money, a church which is the current parish church. In 1665, Vimy was promoted capital province of Franc-Lyonese. After the death of its benefactor, the parish of Vimy renamed Neuville-l' Archevêque .
The XVIII° century, the economic development of the region of Lion made it possible Neuville to become a center of textile industry, and to increase its population considerably. In 1790, at the time of the constitution of the department of the Rhone-and-Loire, Neuville counted 1600 inhabitants, including 114 having right to vote for the election of the municipalité.
During the Revolution, Neuville-l' Archevêque had to change name: it was initially the Marat-on-Saone , then the Neuville-on-Saone , its final name.

Origin of the name of Vimy

Several etymologies are possible:
  • of Latin Viminiacum , name of a town of Pannonia in which would have been originating the founders of Vimy, installed here after the victory of Septime Sévère over Niger and Clodius Albinus close to Trévoux in 197 ap. J.C., or perhaps after the victory of Probus over Proculus in 276
  • deformation of via minima, name of the road connecting Lyon to Trévoux, which passed by there
  • of Latin vimen , wicker, plant which pushes readily in the marshy places like the plain of the Saone (etymology due to Prof F.Gaillard, from Dijon)
The first of these etymologies seems confirmed by a text of Guillaume Paradin in his Histoire of Lyon written in 1573: The Severe Emperor his father coming as a Gaulle, against Clodius Albinus, and estant arrived at Vimy, (which is small and ancient, the Villette close to Lyon) declared and eslut Bassianus sin César wire for estre consort of his Empire, and for luy to succeed quelquefois. (Bassianus is more known under the name of Caracalla)

June 11th, Louis Lumière films the congressmen going down from boat in the Neuville-on-Saone. 24 hours later, the film named " Arrived of the congressmen at the Neuville-on-Saone " is projected in the Living rooms Monnier (Place Bellecour) before an amazed assembly. It is the very first documentary one of topicality of the history of the cinema.
