Synopsis

The film is the adaptation of the Romance éponyme of Umberto Eco.

In the credits of opening, the film is explicitly presented in the form of a Palimpseste novel, i.e. he does not claim with an exact fidelity but which he is a work of which he shares the same support. Its contents are nevertheless very faithful to the novel. A wink is made with Umberto Eco, when Guillaume de Baskerville in the Bibliothèque extasy on a work of " Umberto of Bologna " (city where Umberto Eco is professor).

The film is built like the illusion of the staircase without end of Roger Penrose (or Escher), staircase where besides the combat in the fire between the “  will take place; bon  ” monk franciscain Guillaume de Baskerville, in addition former inquisitor, and one of the “  méchants  ”, ex-librarian of the abbey, Jorge of Burgos (another wink, of U. Eco this time, with Jorge Shine Borges and with its news the Library of Babel ).

As in Notre-Dame de Paris of Victor Hugo, the medieval world is illustrated with the deformed one (uneven), the erotic young girl, the religiosity, the peasants primary education and here the copyists for a pagan book.

Jean-Jacques Annaud solicited for film the German producer Bernd Eichinger which financed this expensive project. Sean Connery heavily insisted in order to obtain the main role of this adaptation which was not done without difficulties: several scenario writers planchèrent on this difficult work of transposition (the first being the appointed scenario writer of Year Alain Godard). The prestigious Italian operator chief Tonino Delli Colli (which had worked with Pier Paolo Pasolini) signed the lights, and the Italian decorator Dante Ferretti rebuilt the austere abbey in the the Abruzzi, not far from Rome. The music of James Horner (the future type-setter of the b.o of Titanic ) confers on film an at the same time beautiful environment, envoûtante and terrifying without being stripped of melancholy.
