The Monk

the Monk ( The Monk ) is a Romance English of the writer Matthew Gregory Lewis, published in 1796. This early work, emblematic of the Romance Gothic, will have a considerable influence and will inspire many imitateurs.

Mathew Gregory Lewis wrote this novel in 10 months with an aim of diverting his/her mother. It can appear very subversive in the topics approached (rape, inceste, matricide, black magic…) or in the attitude of certain characters (Elvira cutting out certain passages of the Bible for " protéger" his/her daughter Mathilda or the monk selling his heart with the devil). Therefore the novel was censured has its time. Nevertheless, morals remains anchored in the customs and habits of the company. Antonia and Ambrosio are dedicated upon the departure with an unquestionable death because they are the children of a bad marriage (noble with a commoner). In this direction, the Monk vehicle aristocratic fears of the collapse of the social hierarchical order. Moreover, if Beatrice and Agnes are locked up in a vault and must be confronted with dead (theirs or that of their descent) it is because they failed owe them, breaking their religious wishes for loves impure. Thus, the reason must subject passion. the Monk can thus be seen like a conventional novel.

In France, in 1931, Antonin Artaud publishes a very personal translation of it ( the monk, of Lewis, told by Antonin Artaud ) and plans to adapt it to the cinema.
