The Master of the Evil

the Master of the Evil is the third volume of the series the Wheel of Time of the American writer Robert Jordan. With the French translation, this volume - as all others - was separate in two volumes: the Dragon Réincarné and Play of Darkness . These two volumes come following Great Hunting (itself separated by the translation in the Horn from Valère and the Banner of the Dragon ).

the Dragon Réincarné left in 1998 and the Play Darkness in 1999, all two with the Payot editions & Rivages in the collection Rivages/Fantasy. The American original version, entitled The Dragon Reborn was published by Tor Books the September 15th 1991. It was translated into French by Arlette Rosenblum.

Summary of the intrigue

the Dragon Réincarné consists of a prolog (entitled the Fortress of the Light ) and of 30 chapters.

the Play of Darkness , as for him, consists of 26 chapters, numbered from 31 to 56 included.

Mountains of the Fog until Tear

Rand al' Thor, which had autoproclamé the Réincarné Dragon at the end of the preceding book, secretly leaves the camp of warriors of Shienar established in the Mountains of the Fog to go in Tear and to prove that it is well the Réincarné Real termagant. He is however pursued by the forces of the Dark one.

Moiraine Damodred, Lan Mandragoran and Perrin Aybara having discovered its escape the next morning, leaves to its continuation. On the way, they meet Chasseuse of the Cor name of Faile Bashere, fight against Dogs of Darkness and discover that Rejected Sammael directs Illian.

During this time, Matrim Cauthon, always reached by the evil of Shadar Logoth through its dagger, is transported until Tar Valon by Jack Mathwin (a Aes Sedai), Nynaeve al' Meara, Egwene al' Vere and Elayne Trakand. Once arrived at Tar Small valley, Nynaeve, Egwene and Elayne receive Seat of Amyrlin - Siuan Sanche - the task to track the Black Sisters (Aes Sedai of Ajah black) of the Tower. A track leads the trio to Tear. Egwene and Elayne become also Acceptées.

Chechmate, as for him, is Guéri in a permanent way of the influence of its dagger of Shadar Logoth by Aes Sedai, using a sa' angreal . A little later it finds Thom Merrilin with an inn, discovering by là-même that the ménestrel had not died as it supposed it. The two men escape from Tar Valon together and go to Caemlin, capital of Andor, to give a letter of Elayne there to his/her mother Morgase, queen of Andor. There, Mat learns by chance the existence from a plot developped at the point by the lover from the queen Morgase, Lord Gaebril (which is in fact Rejected Rahvin). This plot having for goal to assassinate Elayne, Girl-Heiress of Andor, Mat moves towards Tear to try to stop it.

In Pierre de Tear

In Tear, Nynaeve, Egwene and Elayne, which continued Black Sisters, are betrayed by Juilin Sandar (which was forced against its will by Liandrin). Aes Sedai of Ajah Noire capture them then and imprison them in Pierre de Tear, from where they will escape thanks to Mat and repenting Juilin. Is necessary, as for it, fall into a trap from Ajah Noire originally designed to reach Moiraine and Perrin risks its life in the World of the Dreams to save it.

Rand and Rejected Be' lal fights in duel in the middle of Pierre de Tear, where Callandor is preserved, the sword that only the Réincarné Dragon can take. Be' lal tries to force Rand to take Callandor to be able to have it for itself, but fortunately Moiraine stops the battle and kills Be' lal by surprised with the malefeu. Ba' alzamon appears then, neutralizes Moiraine and attacks Rand. Rand catches and holds up then Callandor, proving by this gesture that it is well the Réincarné Dragon, and with the sword Ba' alzamon kills. Rand thinks of having killed the Dark one, that he thought of being Ba' alzamon, but Moiraine does it déchanter by affirming to him that the Dark one not being human, he could not be Ba' alzamon, this one having left a body behind him. Moiraine from of deduced that the body is that of Ishamael, one Rejected. Aiels present clandestinely in Tear and in the search of That-Which-Come-With-the Aube conquer Pierre de Tear and reveal to be the People of the prophesied Dragon.
