Synopsis

The senator Stoddard and his wife return in Shinbone, in the West, for the burial of Tom Doniphon. The local journalist benefits from it to interview it. Stoddard thus evokes the time when coldly graduate in right, it unloaded with the ideal to bring legality in the West. But little before its arrival with Shinbone, its diligence is attacked by Liberty Valance, a gangster without scruple of public notoriety. Stoddard does not obtain either the support of the sheriff, couard notable, nor of Doniphon, one of the rare people whom Valance fears.
