The Man of the plays

the Man of the plays (original title: The Player off Ranges ) is a novel of Science-fiction of the Scottish writer Iain Mr. Banks. This work was published for the first time in 1988 (and in 1992 for the French translation). It can be regarded as a Space operated .

Presentation of work

This novel belongs to the cycle of the '' Culture '', a series of intrigues imagined by the author. Also, the Man of the plays comprises four parts: a platform in Culture , Imperium , Machina ex machina and Dead end on the pawn .

Summary

Within the Culture, some plays arouse a great interest. They are plays complex, founded on calculation and the strategy. To many regards, these plays recall the failures.

Of all the player-of-plays , Jernau Morat Gurgeh is without question one of most frightening and most famous. Not only it gained important victories, but it also wrote on the game theory.

Now that it does not have anything any more to prove, Gurgeh is with research new challenges, of a new direction to its existence. Via the drone (Robot) Chamlis Amalk-ney, Gurgeh will be addressed to Contact , service of the Culture specialized in the evaluation and the infiltration of foreign civilizations.

Thus, Gurgeh will be seen proposing a voyage. In fact, Contact will offer the occasion to him to visit the Empire of Azad and to take part in its crowned play.

Opposite this possibility, Gurgeh will be very hesitant. Initially, it is the first time that he hears of the Empire. According to information of Contact, Azadiens differ largely from the citizens of the Culture: their company is individualistic, treated on a hierarchical basis and Barbare, their technology is less advanced and their mode of reproduction implies the participation of three distinct kinds. Then, the duration of the voyage will be five years. Lastly, the play of Azad seems infinitely complex and demanding…

For Gurgeh, the taste of the innovation will carry it however. Thus, the player-of-plays will choose to try the adventure.

Among Azadiens, Gurgeh will be one of only the representative of its world. Also, it will feel somewhat scorned. Nevertheless, it will do only little case of it. At most, he will endeavor to comply with the rules and the protocols. With this intention, it will be assisted of a drone: Flère-Imsaho.

With the play of Azad, Gurgeh will make beautiful figure. Confronted with increasingly frightening adversaries, it will not cease surprising and gaining. Soon, its progression will worry more the top-ranking executives of the Empire, those which owe their statute with their prowesses with the play.

Gurgeh will be invited to cease playing. Then, it will be the target of attacks. Towards and against all, it will continue to be devoted to the play and to put the Empire in the embarrassment. At the end of its course, only one adversary will be able to save the honor: the Emperor himself…

For Azadiens, the Emperor always wants to be the best player. Moreover, Gurgeh will be impressed by its style-of-play .

At the beginning of the confrontation, Gurgeh will be dominated. Little by little, it will return however in the part. Initially, he will discover how the Emperor approaches the play: like a fight enters the Empire and the Culture. Then, it will adapt to this reality: he will play in a more daring way, more effective.

These are thus two worlds, two universes which will be opposed. When Gurgeh carries it, all the structure of the Empire will collapse. Later, Gurgeh will discover that the Culture handled it.

The human ones

Professor Boruélal , knowledge of Gurgeh, it will speak to him about a very talented player;

Drones

The drones are small intelligent robots. They are expressed by the word and occupy of the quite precise roles. Also, they move while floating in the airs (from where their name). Lastly, they are surrounded by a '' will have '' whose color reflects to them state of heart .

In the Man of the plays , the hero interacts with the following drones:

Chamlis Amalk-ney , old of approximately 4000 years, it is a friend of Gurgeh. Moreover, he lavishes many councils to him;

Flère-Imsaho , Contact charged it with accompanying Gurgeh among Azadiens.

During its mission, Flère-Imsaho took care on the player-of-plays: it made sure that it respects the protocols, held it informed, advised it, protected it from physical dangers. Moreover, it made him discover the true nature of Azadiens.

On the relational level, Flère-Imsaho and Gurgeh got along more or less. On several occasions, Flère-Imsaho found Gurgeh carefree. As for the player-of-play, he regarded the drone as a boring ;

Loash , agent of Contact, it visited Gurgeh whereas this one was unaware of still the existence of Azadiens. Its objective: to make sure of the interest of Gurgeh to travel. Loash was not to mention any Empire;

Mawhrin-Skel , it is irascible and insolate. In the beginning, it was conceived to be a drone of Contact. However, never it could not join to it: it was of a too unstable and quarrelsome nature.

to obtain repair, Mawhrin-Skel will make use of Gurgeh. Initially, it will encourage it to cheat against Olz Hap. Then, it will make it sing: threatening to tarnish its reputation, he will ask him to use of his influence and to make it reinstate Contact;

Azadiens

According to the kind to which they belong, these humanoïdes can be either male, or female, or apical . At the time of the reproduction, the males fertilize the apical ones. Then, those establish their eggs fertilized in the Utérus of the females.

On the social plan, the apical ones represent the sex dominating. It is them which occupy the most prestigious stations. As for the males, they are generally soldiers. As regards the females, they are usually regarded as objects.

Lo Péquil Monénine senior (apical), liaison officer near the Office of the extra-imperial Businesses of the Empire. It accommodated Gurgeh on Eä. Moreover, he escorted it at the time of public exits;

Lo Prinest Bermoiya (apical), judge at the Supreme court of Eä. Adversaries in Azad, Gurgeh and bet to him: at the conclusion of their part, the loser was to be châtré. Finally, Gurgeh left victorious;

Analyzes

The meeting of two worlds

the Man of the plays , it is initially the shock of two civilizations, that is to say the Culture on a side, and Azad of the other. On the political plan and social, these worlds are with the antipodes: whereas the Culture is open, advanced and levelling, Azad is intolerant (sexist), declining and arranged hierarchically. In this context, the presence of Gurgeh among Azadiens is far from being anecdotic. Rather, it represents the meeting of these two universes.

Throughout the account, the reader will be brought to make his own reflection, to forge his own opinion: if Azad and the Culture differ, they evoke both the human heart. Thus, Azad wants to be the reflection of what the human one has of uglier: cruelty, Sadism, Violence. As for the Culture, its philosophy seems tempting. However, it does not remain about it less questionnable. Thus, if she preaches the individual freedoms, the history of Gurgeh shows the opposite rather: the player-of-play was misled and used by Contact. Seen under this angle, the Culture is not any more the Utopie which it seemed to be.

Set of themes of the play

Of all the evoked plays, none is described in a detailed way. Rather, the author explores the play as a Concept, as a Symbole. With this intention, it is introduced into the thought of its characters, of his hero. Consequently, the play serves various functions.

For the citizens of the Culture, it is about a form of Art, of a Loisir of noblest. For Azadiens, it is primarily a means: means of acquiring a statute, of structuring to them company. For the hero of the history, it is what defines it, the base of sound identity.

In the Man of the plays , the play revêt a paradoxical aspect: if it is source of recreation, it is especially taken with the serious one. In fact, it is not so much the play which the victory which counts: this is true as much for Gurgeh that for Azadiens.

To gain is thus the original intention. However, all do not grant the same significance to the victory. Thus, Gurgeh wishes to gain because he seeks to exceed himself. As for Azadiens, they regard the victory as an occasion to climb the levels of their company: whereas Gurgeh seems justified interior, Azadiens seem the being of outside. As of the second part of work (and even front), this contrast appears in backdrop.
