Synopsis

Link Jones arrives downtown, obviously badly at ease, disturbed by the life town and frightened by the steam train. It comes from an insolated village and unknown. When a sheriff warns it, it is presented under a false name. The man intrigues a traveller a little crafty beggar who undertakes it. Link tells him that it leaves to recruit a teacher to teach in her village, and that it has with him the fruit of a money collection of the inhabitants to convince it. The man then introduces to one charming singer of saloon to him which it makes pass for a teacher, but the attempt at flouer Link, much less easily deceived than it of with the air, turns short: the train makes a halt and the men are requisitioned to charge wood necessary to its good performance. It is this moment that a group of outlaw chose to launch an attack on the train and to seize the money which it contains. The train sets out again, the attack is pushed back, but all the passengers did not have time to go up there: remain on the Link way, the crafty beggar and the singer. They are in full shift, without nose gear one week and must seek a refuge. They go through a green landscape and end up falling on a dwelling which seems abandoned. Link called to both others to return in the barn, suits him to knock on the door: the men who open are those which tried the attack of the train. They threaten Link of their weapons and make it enter. The situation is tended enough, but the house is familiar in Link, like the voice which makes it start, that of an old insane gang leader to half which leaves the other part. The old man recognizes Link, that which was formerly its best pupil in the crime, and which one day fled. The old man would have killed it out of rage at this time there if it had found it. But there is that of the years and the old man wants to believe that Link returned for him. To remain in life, and to preserve that of his/her two companions in misfortune, Link has of another choice only to make him believe it, and to agree to take part in the attack of the bank of a gold mine, while knowing that the other members of the band do not believe at all in its history…

Comment

The diagram scenaristic is the same one as that of the Affameurs (also of Anthony Mann, with James Stewart) with knowing a man who repurchased a control but which at the time of an incident reveals a turbid past. The characters of the various characters however here are singularly exacerbated. The gangsters are radically sadistic and when Link Jones joined them, contrast is seizing between what it became - a simple, ingenuous character and of good will in all - and what it was - a rough bloodthirsty man. If the film in its entirety, not only the characters but also his intrigue, could confine with a coarse caricature, it is that in truth, it is located more on a ground symbolic system and oneiric. The springs scenaristic rather ubuesques, the irrational behavior of the hero who goes right in the mouth of the wolf, evokes a dream where the sleeper - in fact, Link Jones is rather wait and see - is guided by his unconscious. The hero must purge this cruelty which is still a share of itself. The setting in scene besides reinforces the ambivalence of the character so much so that one can wonder whether the wild acts accomplished by the gangsters are not ultimately the fact of its own driven back cruelty. It is thus naturally that it is led towards the source of this ambivalent personality: the place where it passed its childhood, under the crook of a criminal.

Orphan, high in the apology for the crime, guarantees virility, and duplicity, set up in absolute rule of social survival, Link Jones then assists, privileged witness, to the dead end (a phantom city) in which would have led this education. There in the final scene, the inevitable confrontation urges initially the character to liquidate the various members of the barbarian clan, each one carrying an aspect of its personality, to lead in very good logic œdipienne to kill the father, putting a term at its schizophrenia.

More largely, it will be noted that the original title of work is Man off the West , the “produced” man of the West, and not The Man From The West , the man which comes from the West, subtlety which the French translation does not retranscribe. Perhaps it is necessary to understand by there that Anthony Mann sought to draw up a more general portrait of the descendants of the pioneers, still under the influence of the atavistic violence which governed the Conquête of the West.

The film is generally regarded as the large last Western of Mann (its following film, Rush towards the West being a “town” western), in which it réexplore the research topic of redemption that research a hero with the last disorder and heavy from which he has evil to be detached.
