The Man and the Journey is the name of two conceptual pieces of music played in concert by Pink Floyd in 1969. Many of their first songs and the news are found there.

Unfolding

During the year 1969, the four musicians of Pink Floyd have the idea to stick end to end pieces drawn from their repertory, to associate other news, and to thus present of them on scene of the conceptual continuations around a key idea. Two works are born thus: The Journey (“the voyage”), and The Man (“the Man”), first steps of future creations of the group. They are played of spring 1969 until the beginning of the year 1970.

The Man

The Man tells the day of an ordinary man, in all his archetypal character. That starts with Daybreak (“To raise day”), the Grantchester Meadows of Ummagumma . The following piece, Work , never left in album. It is a part which one could describe as " music concrête" who makes interbvenir the hammer, the saw hand saw, the vibraphone and the battery, the whole remaining very melody. After that, with the image of the man of The Man returning at his place, the members of the group are made serve the on scene by a roadie . A piece very Blues there, Afternoon , appears on compilation Relics (1971, under the title Biding My Time . The man puts himself then at the bed with his partner for Doing It (literally, “to do it”).

Sleep , the sleep follows, which off points out the second part of the instrumental exchange of Set the Controls for the Heart the Sun . The glissendi of guitar and the vibratos of the organ weave a very evocative éthérée screen. An apparatus especially designed for the clavierist Rick Wright, “Azimuth Coordinator”, distributes the sounds in all the directions in alternation. Cymbaline , a piece of the album More , arrives then under the title Nightmare , “nightmare”. With this part The Man is completed, which contains already germinates of them some topics which will be developed in the following albums of the group: alienation, existential anguish…

The Journey

Like The Man , The Journey (“the voyage”) is a joining end to end of pieces drawn from the repertory of the group, and other new parts, around a key idea.

It opens on a piece logically entitled The Beginning (“the beginning”) and which is in fact Green is the Color . With its continuation Beset by Creatures off the Deep is connected (“Badgered by night creatures”), title given for the occasion to Careful With That Axe, Eugene . The third piece, The Narrow Way , is still new when it is presented within the framework of The Journey , unlike its two predecessors. This composition of David Gilmour, developed, appears in the album Ummagumma . The Pink Jungle is a resumption of Pow R. Toc H. , piece of the time Barrett.

The Labyrinths off Auximenes (“labyrinths of Auximènes”) is another new, which points out much the sequence Sleep of The Man , until the use of “Azimuth Coordinator”. It is followed of another innovation, Behold the Temple off Light (“See the temple of the light”), slow and solemn piece which is followed of The End off the Beginning , new name of coded majestueusement has Saucerful off Secret , sometimes developed with coppers and choruses.
