The Lord of the rings (films)
Note: this article treats film in three parts realized by Peter Jackson and left between 2001 and 2003. For the Cartoon film of Ralph Bakshi, to see the Lord of the Rings (film, 1978).
A complex adaptation
A long time, the novel the Lord of the Rings of J.R.R. Tolkien was regarded as unadaptable because of complexity of the book, of the big number of characters, the epic dimension of the work and the difficulties of cinematographic transposition, insoluble in terms of special effects.
In 1978, Ralph Bakshi adapts the Lord of the Rings as a cartoon. It uses a Rotoscope, machine which makes it possible to obtain a character animated starting from real scenes. Thus the hobbit are entirely drawn, while the Nazgûl are filmed actors, worked again then encrusted in the drawings. This film which tells only part of the work of Tolkien corresponding to the first volume and part of the second was not a business success, so that the adaptation of the work of Tolkien remains incomplete.
From 1995-97, Peter Jackson, known realizer New Zealand hitherto for some films gores and fantastic ( celestial Creatures , Phantom against phantoms ), is interested in the adaptation of the novel in the absence of being able to carry out its dream in the immediate future, to film a new version of King Kong . The producers that he contacts for this adaptation propose him to make a version in two shutters of it then only one and single film, which implies to operate many cuts in original work. Finally, a door opens: it has one month to give its definitive answer, free with him to find in this amount of time another producer. Against any waiting, the American company New Line which it meets the last day of the expiry of the period proposes him to carry out film in three shutters, thus guarantees fidelity with the original cutting of the book.
Films
Films of the trilogy, the Lord of the Rings: The Community of the Ring , the Lord of the Rings: The Two Turns and the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King , one 3 hours duration each one, left in December 2001, 2002 and 2003, profiting from a simultaneous exit in many countries, in particular in Europe and America. The essence of film is then carried out of only one draft, and of the additional sequences are turned to increase the cohesion of the unit and to perfect the elements hinges, present in the long versions in DVD. This way of doing associated with turning in New Zealand makes it possible to be satisfied of a budget of 180 million dollars. The first opus gains such a success that it only suffices for him to make profitable the whole of the turning of the trilogy.
Turning
The principal turning of three films was carried out simultaneously between September 1999 and December 2000. It was entirely carried out in New Zealand, fatherland of Peter Jackson, country which offers a large variety of landscapes likely to represent the diversity of the Earth of the Medium. Turning in studio and the majority of the post-production (in particular special effects) are also carried out on the spot, which makes it possible to reduce the production costs because of advantageous foreign exchange rate and the lower costs of the material. The turning of additional scenes was carried out in May - June 2002.
Post-production by film (special effects, composition of the music, recording of the voices, turning of complementary scenes,…) last nearly one year, which explains the time between the exit of each film.
The turning of the scenes of combat required the development of a new software baptized Massive by the firm of the special effects of Peter Jackson, Weta DIGITAL. This software makes it possible to insufflate a realistic behavior with each ten of thousands of characters of synthesis appearing in scenes of crowd or battle. Improved in the last opus, it confers a realism to cut the breath to horses of synthesis and authorizes unrealizable virtual cascades differently.
Cash few known actors, except Christopher Lee, Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood or Liv Tyler, the film are a success at the visual level and effects special. The character of Gollum, entirely realized in synthesized images according to the captures of movements of the actor Andy Serkis, revolutionizes the concept of virtual actor and assoit definitively the credibility of film.
The exit of this trilogy is distributed over three consecutive years and is synchronized, except for the day, during the festivals of Christmas, in the rooms of the whole world. A concept of publication in original DVD is then set up. Each film appears initially in its version cinema (decorated of a disc of no-claims bonus) before being the object, a few months later, of a long version (comprising two discs of no-claims bonus with comments audios) and of a version collector (taking again the long version and by including a statuette representative of film there). The new elements form part of the perfect continuity of the history and raise of the same qualitative level, requiring a colossal work as well persons in charge of the special effects of the new sequences as of the type-setter, the Canadian Howard Shore, who must supplement and réorchestrer most of his original partition.
Peter Jackson obtained from New Line that the first world one of the Return of the King takes place in the capital of its country Wellington.
