Synopsis

Colin Smith is a revolted young person, who, following a flight made in a shop, is placed in a reformatory. Practitioner the basic race, it escapes in daydreams from his dull daily newspaper during his solitary races. He gains his notoriety in the establishment thanks to his performances of runner.   • Jean-Louis Bory: The beautiful title. Like all the beautiful titles, it satisfies its own harmony initially. Satisfaction which concerns the poetic “charm”. Then interpretations come. They are at least two as for any poetry. With the first degree we remain on the plan of appearances, of pure and simple reality: it is indeed a long-distance runner which, all along its exhausting race, is only, delivered to its only physical resources and morals. With the second degree, on the plan of the symbol: throughout his life, comparable with a sporting test, any man is this solitary runner, especially when it chose the revolt. All the film of Richardson is built on the narrow interlacing of two continuations of scenes in agreement with this double interpretation. The success of this film is due much to the astonishing presence of Tom Courtenay. Of a rather ungrateful physique - which evokes the bird fallen from the nest, the small sensitive to the cold animal - he plays with an astonishing variety. Excellent soundtrack where the music, far from making dual employment with the image, plays in squeaking contrast (canticles on one of the images of beating up) or indicates the feeling suggested by the movement of the camera (jazz, for example, to underline the joy or the burlesque one); ability of the assembly grafting one on the other two continuations of images in an arbitrary stripped way. But the camera works to suggest by its movement the movements on which the history proceeds. She makes an effort, runs, breath, halète, dazzles herself in agreement with Smith, or immobilizes herself (plane general) for better extending on the landscapes when the four young person dogs, at the seaside, gesticulent in extreme cases of the horizon or that the runner springs in the vast freshness of the paddle.
