The department of the Loire (42) is a French department which owes its name with the river which crosses it.
History
The first Gallic people having lived in the area are the Ségusiaves.
The department of the Loire was created during the French revolution, in 1793, by dismemberment of the department of the Rhone-and-Loire, and corresponds to the province of the Forez.

Geography
The department of the Loire belongs to the
area the Rhone-Alps. It is bordering on the departments
the Rhone, Isere, Ardèche,
Haute-Loire,
Puy-de-Dôme, Allier and of
Saône-et-Loire.
The department draws its name from the the Loire, river which crosses it south to north on more than 100 km.

The department knows two traditional languages:

Francoprovençal, the Loire says
Lêre and in
Occitan Leger/Leir .

The inhabitants of the Loire are the
Ligériens .
The department of the Loire counts 40 cantons and 327 communes. It is divided admnistrativement into 3 districts:
- District of Saint-Etienne
- District of Roanne
- District of Montbrison
The district of
Saint-Etienne is composed of 74 communes and 19 cantons (415 576 inhabitants). The district of
Roanne as for him is composed of 115 communes and 11 cantons (152 659 inhabitants). Lastly, the district of Montbrison is composed of 138 communes and 10 cantons (160 289 inhabitants).
