the Little Red Riding Hood is a Conte pertaining to the oral tradition, retranscribed by Charles Perrault in France and by the Frères Grimm in Germany. It was published for the first time in 1697 in the Tales of my mother Oye .

Origins of the tale

the Little Red Riding Hood is a tale of the popular tradition, which knew many versions during the history. It acts at the base of an account for child, but who contains topics having milked with the Sexualité, with the Violence and the Cannibalisme. The tale opposes, in a very medieval convention, the sure universe of the village to the dangers of the forest, even if no written version goes up at that time. It is besides the Middle Ages which the Small Hood holds its color Rouge: indeed, the three dominant colors at that time were the red, the white and the black. If the wolf is black, white butter, it was necessary thus that heroin is red.

One finds trace of the history in the oral tradition of many countries of Europe, under various versions, former to the 17th century. The French peasants told the history as of the 11th century. One of the oral versions of the tale is known for us, it is one of bloodiest: the Wolf, arrived in the Grandmamma, devours it by keeping some however a little on side, and takes its place. The little girl arrives and, suspecting nothing, obeys the false grandmother saying to him to eat a little meat and of drinking a little wine, makes of it the flesh and the blood of the grandmother (the little girl would question herself even as for the teeth present in the flesh, question which the Wolf would answer him that they are beans). In the Italian version of Finta Nonna ( the False Grandmother ), the little girl overrides the Wolf thanks to its own trick, without the assistance of a man or an older woman. The hunter, character added later on, limit heroin with a more passive role. Some will see the will there to maintain the women “in their place”, dependant on the assistance of a strong man.

The written version oldest is that of Charles Perrault, published in the Tales of my Mother Oye in 1697. This version will be more unhappy and moralisatrice that those which will follow. Heroin is the quite high young girl, prettiest of the village, which runs to its loss while giving to the wolf that it meets in the forest the indications necessary to find the house of her grandmother. This last eats the old woman by hiding loggers who work in the close forest. It tightens then a trap in the Little Red Riding Hood and ends up eating it. The history finishes some there, on the victory of the wolf. No the happy end for heroin, the morals of Perrault is without call.

To the 19th century, two distinct versions were brought back to Jakob Grimm and his/her brother Wilhelm (the famous brothers Grimm): the first by Sleeve-board Hassenpflug (1791 - 1860) and the second by Marie Hassenpflug (1788 - 1856). The two brothers made first version the principal history and second a continuation. The history of Rotkäppchen ( the Red Hood ) appeared in the first edition of their collection Kinder- und Hausmärchen ( Contes of the Children and the Hearth , 1812)). In this version, the young girl and her grandmother are saved by a hunter tracking the Wolf. The continuation shows the young girl and her grandmother trapping and killing another wolf, anticipating its gestures thanks to the experience gained during the first history.

The brothers modified the history in the posterior editions, until reaching the most known version in the edition of 1857. This edulcorated version, largely spread, tells the history of a little girl who crosses the forest to bring a wafer, a pot of butter and jam with her grandmother. In way, the young girl makes the meeting of a wolf, which traps it at the end and devours it and her grandmother. A hunter comes nevertheless to save them by opening the belly of the Loup. The Little Red Riding Hood and his grandmother leave there healthy and save.

The topic of the character eaten by the Wolf and left the belly returns to the tale of Pierre and the Wolf.

Hood

The Chaperon is, at the time of Charles Perrault, a popular and middle-class, but already obsolete hairstyle female. The thing is natural, the costume of the children of the 17th century of the easy classes is characterized by its archaism and its loans with the popular modes. This Little Red Riding Hood would be thus the mark of the desire of the village protagonists to be socially distinguished, a sign of the affection of the mother and the grandmother for their charming little girl.

Symbolic system explanation

Certain researchers (in particular Pierre Saintyves) saw in the red hood a crown of flowers, which would make heroin a queen of May , character of the popular folklore. This interpretation is fought by the specialists in comparative literature who point out that the various versions of the tale do not insist all on this feature which appears to be put forward by Perrault and the Grimm brothers attaches this tale to the tradition of the accounts of warning or warning statement against dangerous behaviors, in fact to be let approach by an unknown.

Psychoanalytical interpretation

According to Bruno Bettelheim, author of the Psychoanalysis of the fairy tales , the Little Red Riding Hood would symbolize the character of the little girl to the doors of puberty, the choice of the red color of the hood returning to the menstrual Cycle.

The village and the house of the grandmother are sure places, way between childhood and the adulthood. To arrive at destination, a way should be taken who crosses a forest, place of danger or grinds the Grand malicious wolf. The mother shows to the girl the way to be followed, the “right way” and warns it against the bad meetings. The young girl adopts an ambiguous attitude, since, making mine get rid of the Wolf, it gives him actually all the indications so that this one finds the grandmother, and eats it… Arrived at destination, the young girl sees well that something does not go, (“That you have large teeth”) but… finishes in the bed of the Wolf.

The Wolf, present in other tales like predator ( Tom Thumb ), is the figure of the sexual predator here.
