Summary

PENITENTIARY Of STATE EST-POINT, LEON COUNTY, FLORIDA

In the Penitentiary of State Be-Point, Florida, the prisoner Napoleon " Nietzsche" Manley prepares to die. His wife is near him. He refuses the presence of a priest. During this time there, the torturer is on the way and the head warden prepares to carry out the execution.

At the last time, on the electric chair, it makes the promise to return and to be made justice by carrying out five men.

HEAD OFFICE OF THE FBI, THREE DAYS LATER

Mulder exposes the case of prisoner 50416, " Nietzsche" Manley. Condemned into 84 for a double murder at the time of the attack of a grocer, whereas he was only the driver. The true murderer was not found. Manley was called " Nietzsche" or " Philosophe" because of its field crop. According to its fellows-prisoner, it spent its last days has to make the promise to return among deaths and to be avenged.

Two days after the execution, one of the guards was found died in the cell even where Manley had spent its eleven last years of detention. Death by smothering is unexplainable.

PENITENTIARY Of STATE EST-POINT

According to the director of the penitentiary, a prisoner simply followed the prophecy of Manley and made him justice. The director leads the agents in the room of autopsy: Scully discovers that the body is corroded by the worms.

Mulder questions one of the fellows-prisoner of Manley, John Esperanza. According to him, not only Manley will return but the guards also believe and doubled in it the monitoring of the corridor of death.

During the visit, Scully requires to visit the cell of Manley. While benefitting from the absence of the guard which accompanied it, it makes a small round until in the showers of the section. There, a man approaches it and whispers to him that one of the prisoners, a certain Castling, has a list made by Manley before its death. The man is called Parmelly and ensured Scully that he wants to help it. Their interview is curtailed by the arrival of the guard.

Choked by the atmosphere of the Corridor, Scully presses Mulder to leave the place.

2nd DAY, 7:03 OF the MORNING

During a morning cleaning of a corridor of the prison, by opening a pot of painting, a prisoner makes macabre discovered head of the Fornier guard, corroded by the worms.

Helped of a doctor of the prison, Scully tries the study of the remainders. The body was not found. It would seem that the guard was struck with stab of plasterer before being made decapitate.

Mulder questions the Roque prisoner. This one insists to speak in another block and leaves the Corridor under the threats of Esperanza. He tells that he heard Manley of the list one evening with Esperanza. The list would contain five names. Castling requires to be transferred in another penitentiary in exchange from the three other remaining names on the list.

Of course, the director refuses to walk in what it takes for a trick of prisoner. Accompanied by Mulder and Scully, it makes the discovery of the body of Fornier in its own office.

2nd DAY, 15:45

Scully studies the cell of Manley in the search of indices on the contents of the list. The library of the prisoner appears very rich (Descartes, Sartre, Nietszche, Bacon and the Bible). In its notes, Manley is shown obsessed by the reincarnation, with references to the Hindu religions inter alia. Mulder leans for the assumption of a reincarnation, whereas Scully believes rather in a conspiracy of prisoners or guards.

RESIDENCE OF DANIELLE MANLEY

To try to learn some more, the two agents return visit to the woman of Manley. She entrusts a dream to them which returns to him constantly: his/her husband on the electric chair resisting the execution. She is persuaded that it is able to return.

Obviously, it is frightened. After the departure of the agents, it turns to the guard Parmelly, his lover since the imprisonment of Manley.

During this time, the head warden makes convene Roque in the showers of the block of the Corridor of Death. He advises to him to speak about the list and passes it to tobacco to know the names of them. Castling reveals to him that it is the last of the list. Its body will be found a little later in the showers.

The director learns in Mulder that Roque hated Manley and that they had failed entretuer once. Moreover, one year earlier, Manley had had to be " discipliné" by Fornier and other guards - to translate - beaten wildly. Mulder requires finally the name of him of the torturer to inform it risks which it runs. According to him, Roque east cannot be not really 3rd list.

RESIDENCE OF PERRY SIMON

The torturer is a volunteer, paid in liquid and whose identity is kept secret for safety reasons. The agents have found the apartment deserted for at least two days. On the floor, in a kind of workshop, is the body of Perry Simon, cover of worms like the other victims.

Mulder requires to see Esperanza. This one refuses to say to him which are the names of the list but it ensures to him that Roque did not form part of it. Moreover, he affirms to have seen Manley in front of his cell.

Later, the Warden director proposes a market to him: the reopening of its file against convincing Manley to drop its list.

RESIDENCE OF DANNY CHAVEZ

According to the list of the phone calls of Manley, Scully learns that this one was frequently in liaison with certain a Chavez. However, this same Chavez returned visit in Esperanza by three times since the death of Manley.

It appears that Chavez is a former lawyer. He had represented Manley and now uses his relations to try to make reopen the file of Esperanza. He simply tries to save his skin: Manley takes them as person in charge of its judgment.

Lastly, Chavez teaches them that the woman of Manley maintains a connection with a prison warder. Later in the night, Danny Chavez will be made strangle by an unknown.

RESIDENCE OF DANIELLE MANLEY

After the death of Chavez, Parmelly becomes a suspect of first choice. Accompanied by the director Warden, Mulder and Scully go to the woman of Manley.

They are able just to find it at the sides of the body of Parmelly. It awoke in middle of the night and saw " Nietszche" Manley in its room. Persuaded that Parmelly was had by the spirit of " Nietszche" , it kills it to be protected some.

PENITENTIARY Of STATE EST-POINT

In middle of the night, Esperanza receives the same treatment as Roque in the showers of the penitentiary.

3rd DAY

Mulder and Scully leave the places, the finished investigation, but Mulder does not believe in the culpability of Parmelly.

Little time after their departure, the Warden Director is victim of a fatal road accident while trying to struggle against the phantom of " Nietszche" Manley.
