The Limousin (dialect)
Definition
the Limousin is variety dialectal of Occitan or language of oc, like Auvergnat and Vivaro-alpine (with which it forms the north-occitan unit), the Languedocien, the Provençal and the Gascon (which constitutes them it south-occitan unit). The first troubadours wrote in the Limousin (Guillaume IX of Poitiers, Ebles II of Ventadour, Bernard de Ventadour, Bertran de Born, Arnaut Daniel, Giraut de Bornelh,…) and their heirs generally too. One generally considers that the first documents in occitan were compiled in this dialect, in particular the Boecis, written about the year 1000. It was also the native language of the large lords of Aquitaine or the Limousin, such for example Aliénor of Aquitaine or Richard Lion-hearted, which much wrote and composed of the poems in language limousine.
Origin
The Dialecte the Limousin was until the 16th century the Official language of the area. The Limousin remains the dominant oral language until the beginning of the 20th century, time as from which the French takes the top. One still finds the trace of the Occitan the Limousin in many Patronyme S and place names. The language also left its trace in turnings of sentences (limousinisms) of Limousins, like in their accent.
Geographical distribution
He is spoken in the French area about the the Limousin, as in confolentais of Charente limousine and all the northern part of the the Dordogne, until in lower part of Périgueux.
Use of the language
The Limousin is especially employed by the old inhabitants of the rural areas of more than 50 years. All its speakers are also French-speaking, and its use tends to decline. But the majority of Limousins of birth know, when they do not understand the language perfectly, of the expressions, proverbs or other songs in language occitane which belong to their family inheritance. There exist two nursery schools/primary immersives occitanes (calandretas) in the zone of the dialect the Limousin, one with Limoges, the other with Périgueux. They are laic, free, and use an active and participative pedagogy resulting from the theories of Freinet. They are opened with all without exception, including with the children about which the parents do not speak the language occitane. They take part in the transmission and the continuity of the language limousine by educating children in bilingualism occitan-French.
