the Legend of the pianist on the ocean ( Leggenda LED pianista sull' oceano ) is an Italian film carried out by Giuseppe Tornatore, and left in 1998, drawn from a theatrical part in the form of monolog, Novecento (i.e. 1900, published in 1994), of Alessandro Baricco.

Synopsis

At the dawn of the XXe century, in a room of banquet empty, Danny, one of the machinists of the steamer " Virginian" , discovers an abandoned baby. He adopts it and raises it like his/her own son. Not knowing how to call it, he baptizes it " 1900". 1900 grow on the steamer, live on the steamer, never leave its steamer. Eight years later, Danny, receiving a hook of the boat behind the head, dies. 1900 will have to only grow. One evening, while walking on the boat, he sees a piano. He assied on the stool and plays. Curiously, it reveals a gift for the piano. The years pass without 1900 never posing foot with ground. Then max comes, which will become his/her friend. They do not separate any more, dependant like the two fingers of the hand. 1900 are universally famous as being a virtuoso, able to fascinate by its music. He plays for which wants to hear it: in first as in third class. Producers try to record it and to make it leave in round in the whole world, but 1900 refuse to leave its ship. Its reputation however continues to grow. Jello Roll Morton, which tells to being the inventor of the jazz, causes it in duel. Jello will lose. When max arrives at the end of its contract, it leaves the ship and 1900. But when he learns, a few years later, that Virginian is condemned to be dynamited, max will leave to research his/her friend.
