The Lake

It is by these famous worms that the Lake begins, one of most famous the poetries of Lamartine, in the poetic Méditations .
Julie Charles (the wife of famous the physicist), the mistress of the poet, had not been able to go in August 1817 to the Lac of Le Bourget where it was to re-examine the poet. Phthisical, it died indeed shortly after. Lamartine returns alone to re-examine the places which he formerly visited with her. Surprised to find nature always similar to itself and indifferent, it wishes that she have at least the memory of their last happiness. The mélodieuse softness of the worms expresses fortunately the calm voluptuous one one night of summer, and the fast escape of the hours. Work, made up of sixteen Quatrain S, meets a great success and propels its author to the first rank of romantic poetry .
This composition is often compared with the Tristesse of Olympio , Victor Hugo and with the Souvenir Alfred de Musset. It was put in music by Niedermeyer.
