The the Institute of Political Studies of Lyons , called “Sciences Po Lyon”, is an establishment French public of higher education created in 1948, located at Lyon and attached to the university of Lyon-II. It is one of new the political institutes of studies of France, and it forms for this reason part of the universities.

History

The establishment is created by decree the May 4th 1948 under the name of institute of political studies of the university of Lyon. It takes its current name pursuant to the decree of January 18th, 1969.

It is a public corporation in administrative matter attached to the university of Lyon-II - Light. Its statute is fixed by the decree of December 18th, 1989. The establishment is managed since 1970 - 1971 by a Board of directors trained elected representatives of the students, teachers and of administrative staff and technique, as well as personalities external to the University among which the president of the national Fondation of political sciences and the representative of the managing director of the Public office.

Localization

The IEP is lodged since 1999 with the Center Berthelot, in the VII {{E}} district of Lyon, at ten minutes has foot of the multimode Gare of Perrache, in company of the Center of history of Resistance and the deportation, of Handicap International and the Institute of the social sciences. The buildings comprise: 4000 m for the administrative buildings and teaching (soon in extension with the construction of a new amphitheater), and: 1500 m for the buildings of documentation and services (like the buildings of student's associations and the cafeteria).

Manpower

For the academic year 2005 - 2006, manpower are of:
  • : 1274 students, of which:
    • 800 students of the diploma:
      • 142 in first year,
      • 217 in second year,
      • 255 in third year,
      • 186 in fourth year;
    • 142 students in the masters;
    • 122 students abroad;
    • 210 students preparing the contests of the public administration:
      • 170 at the preparation center with the general administration (CPAG),
      • 40 in license of public administration (LAP).
  • Approximately 295 teachers, of which:
    • an about sixty full-time teaching staff, with including 8 part-time professors associated (PAST) and 5 attached temporary of teaching and research (ATER);
    • nearly two hundred outside contributors.
  • 35 personnel engineers, administrative, technicians and workmen of service (IATOS), including 19 on budgetary employment.

Admission

The selection was introduced with the re-entry 1982.

For the entry in first year, the IEP organizes a common contest with the IEP of Grenoble and of Aix-en-Provence under the name of Sciences Po the Rhone-Alp-Mediterranean. The contest includes/understands:

  • a test of history, coefficient 3, on the French history since 1914;
  • a test of language, coefficient 1;
  • a test of general culture and topicality, coefficient 2;
  • a test relating to a precise work, of coefficient 1 (removed for the contest 1st year since 2007);
The notes of the baccalaureat are taken into account and are assigned a coefficient 2. Two hundred places are proposed, and the average rate of admission is established at 12%.

For the entry in second year, the IEP of Lyon organizes a clean contest and proposes fifty places.

Course

Since the re-entry 2004, the course is carried out in five years, and the diploma of the IEP is recognized with the rank of master.

As in the others political institutes of studies, teaching is marked by the Pluridisciplinarité around the four pillars which are the history, the political sciences (and social), the economy and the Droit.

The first cycle

The first cycle lasts three years, the first two years being very multi-field. In second year, the students choose two of the three courses suggested: International businesses, Public affairs, Communication. The third year is done out the walls, it can be divided into two different six-month periods and can consist of a training course or an university course abroad. A training course runs at the end of the third year is proposed to the students in order to open them with the professional world.

The IEP also proposes, in two years as from the first year, of the parallel (DU) university degrees, concerning Europe (DUEE), the world contemporary native of the Far East (DUMEOC) or the contemporary Arab world (DUMAC). The training of the Chinese, the Japanese or the Arab belongs to these the last two courses.

In Master 2 (second year), 12 programs are proposed:

  • In the specialities professionnalisantes:
    • Strategy of the international cultural exchanges

  • In specializations known as " interns with the IEP" diploma; (i.e. without double-diplomation):

    • preparation with the contests of the public office under the aegis of CEPAG of the IEP of Lyon
    • Trades of journalism in area and with international the

It is in the same way possible to integrate one m2 in another IEP while preserving its diploma of the IEP of Lyon, like validating one m2 of the Lyon university with same specificity. These two options thus largely increase the virtual possibilities of specialization of the IEP of Lyon.

Student's life

Associations

The Commission coed, which brings together representatives of associations, supports experience sharing and the development of interassociatifs projects. It also takes part in the financing of the actions organized by associations, distributing an annual allocation of the Board of directors. The student's life is very animated, in particular thanks to the Office of high (BDE), Sciencesport (sports), with the club of Rugby GPRCaux student trade unions Unef, Alter-étu and LINKED and with associations, like the Cadger (official gazette), Déclics (photography), Fanfaraon (the brass band of the IEP), Bulle of O (cartoon), Melting Sciences Pot (be) (reception of the foreign students), Comequi (promotion of the equitable trade) or Bobinophile (cinema)…

Political life

The political life is discrete ; the political debates remain marginal and a big part of the students does not carry or does not post any political label. However new associations as the committee Odilon-Deck-beam work to widen the political debate through various demonstrations (republican banquets, aperitif-debate, verbal sparring matches, etc).

Each year take place of the elections to elect the representatives of the students to the Board of directors. They function according to a list system distributed on two colleges, one for the first-year students and electing two representatives, and the other for the students of the following years and by electing six. In December 2005, the majority of the board of directors returned to the independent list Alter Étu with five seats against four to UNEF.

The results of the polling station of the IEP, at the time of the elections of CROUS of the Academy of Lyon of November 28th 2006, were distributed as follows: 113 voters, 112 votes cast: 70 for the UNEF (62%), 17 with the PLAIN (15%), 16 with Inter-ESA (14%), 9 with IDEA (8%) and 0 with the Student Moslems of France.

Former students

The former students are approximately seven thousand today. The Association of the former students of the IEP of Lyon is currently chaired by Caroline Lebrard.
