the Insane one of Chaillot is a Play in 2 acts, one of most famous of Jean Giraudoux, than it wrote during the Occupation. It was created in December 1945, after the death of Giraudoux, by Louis Jouvet on his return of America. The main role (Aurélie, the Insane one of Chaillot) was interpreted by Marguerite Moreno which had inspired it, while Jouvet played the part of the Ragman.
The first act which is held with the terrace of “At Francis”, in edge of the Seine, opposes a group of not very scrupulous business men in oil and money search to an eccentric Countess. Supported by Irma the plunger one and her friends, Aurélie mobilizes the people of modest means of Chaillot to thwart the criminal plans of the two business men.
The second act occurs in a basement which is like the cave of a witch, with its trap door… It is the truculent lawsuit of the exploiteurs of humanity who are condemned to disappear - whereas the benefactors of the plants and the animals reappear. At least in the optimistic imagination of the Insane one: “It is enough to a woman of direction so that the madness of the world on her breaks the teeth! ”
Part all at the same time folk, ethnological, ecological, political, poetic, antipsychiatric. Part of love. Prophetic part: “What one does with oil. Misery. War. Ugliness. A miserable world. ”
This part of Giraudoux was since its creation often rejouée in France (Edwige Feuillère, A. Ducaux, Madeleine Robinson, Judith Magre) and in many foreign countries.
With the screen, Katharine Hepburn interpreted (film of Bryan Forbes, 1970). The part was also adapted in “musical” ( , 1969) and in Ballet (music of Rodion Chtchedrine, 1992).
