The Indian of North America

the Indian of North America (The North American Indian) is a collection of Photographie S carried out by Edward Sheriff Curtis between 1907 and 1930.

In 1906, J.P. Morgan offered 15.000 Dollar s/an during 5 years - to refer to the article on Edward Sheriff Curtis - to Curtis for a series on the Indian of North America, in 20 volumes and 1  500 photographs. Morgan was to receive 25 sets and 500 original copies n the other hand. Photography was not the only goal of Curtis. He wanted to also document as much as possible the traditional life of the Indiens of America before it disappears. In its introduction to the first volume, in 1907, Curtis wrote: “Information must be joined together the… by respecting the lifestyle of one of greatest races of humanity, immediately or this opportunity will disappear. ”

Curtis made more 10  000 sound recordings on wax cylinders of music and Indian dialects. It took more 40  000 stereotypes of more than 80 tribes. It raised the tribal habits and stories and described traditional food, the funerary dwellings, clothing, leisures, ceremonies and traditions. He wrote biographical notes of the chiefs of tribes. Most of the time, this material is remained single in the history.

The collection in itself counts 2.000 photographs accompanied by texts. The original plates are with the Université of Northwestern. The Bibliothèque of the Congress scanné these stereotypes and put them on line.
