Synopsis

The impossible Mr Bébé is probably one of the comedies more the mild nutters of the time, a “screwball comedy”, literally “comedy of nuts”. Indeed, if the comic spring of film rests initially on the opposition between two universes, that of research for David and that of the luxury for Susan, it does not remain about it less than all the characters are out-standard, including the animals! Susan runs after a leopard, David after the clavicle of a brontosaur and both after the dog of the aunt who buried the so much awaited bone!

Hawks is not judge of its characters, he does not impose social morals, each one brings to the other the soft madness which he hoped for without acknowledging it. David was about to marry with his secretary who sees only one “professional union there” (to become to It dinosaurs!) and Susan was locked up in its gilded prison.

Once arrived in the house of the aunt, the misunderstandings are connected with sharp pace. Howard Hawks did not hesitate besides to rewrite certain scenes during a turning. David became Mr. Bone (inevitably!) in order not to wake up the suspicions and is presented in the form of a hunter of deer. How then to forget the scene where intimidated by the leopard it arises from the bathroom in stripped female? And the scene where the major of the house, true hunter is astonished to hear howlings of a leopard in full Connecticut, the poor Baby being volitilized…

In addition to his infernal rate/rhythm and his tasty dialogs, the impossible Mr Bébé also imposes the female character like the leader of the intrigue. If Susan remains awkward, it is before very intelligent and voluntary, it manages to take on board David in his tour and allures it. Katharine Hepburn is then the incarnation of the émancipée, elegant and funny woman.

She showed all the richness of her play, she which two years before played already with Cary Grant, the role of a woman being made pass for a man in Sylvia Scarlett of Georges Cukor. A parallel which makes it possible to differently appreciate the prowess of the duet of Hawks. In the impossible Mr Bébé, Hepburn dominates Cary Grant exceeded by the events, in Sylvia Scarlett, Hepburn is loosely made handle by Cary Grant, swindler at the small week.
