the Illustration is the first newspaper in France to be published, in 1891, a Photographie in black and white, and 1907, a photograph colors. It becomes since 1903 the property of the Baschet family. In 1907, it is in its literary supplement that the famous novel of Gaston Leroux, the mystery of the yellow room appears in serial. The hero is then called Boitabille before becoming there Rouletabille in the volume which will appear the following year. At the beginning of the Years 1930, the newspaper, in full prosperity, is with narrow in its buildings of the street Saint-Georges. It acquires in 1931, 30 hectares of market-gardening grounds, with Bobigny, on the site of “the Cow at ease”. A building of red bricks and concrete, 141 meters length and 90 meters broad, surmounted of a 64 meters height tower, is built there in order to accommodate one of largest and most modern printing works of Europe. The manufacture of the weekly magazine exploits two very luxurious techniques of impression at that time: the Photogravure and the offset. The latter makes the Illustration an original periodical in the Written press since this process spreads only after the Second world war. In 1933, the Illustration has in Bobigny seven machines Roland offset including three models two colors. Many pullings colors decorate the articles each week, but it is especially the number of Christmas who incarnates best the name of the weekly magazine. True fireworks of colors, this number required an extra work of work of several months of the whole of the personnel. The historian Jean-Christmas Marchandiau announces in particular the testimony of a famous American editor acknowledging the incapacity of his printers to equalize the prowesses of the team of the printers of Bobigny. In 1930, this number of 35 pages, entirely colors, is sold 35 francs whereas its cost price is quite higher.
the Illustration , which continues to appear during the Second world war, under the direction of the collaborator Jacques de Lesdain, will be prohibited with the Libération. It reappears in 1945 under the title France-Illustration which will perdurera until in 1957.
The printing works of Bobigny continues to function until in 1971. The buildings are used then as warehouses then, become given up, are repurchased by the town of Bobigny which yields them for frank a symbolic system to the Université Paris XIII.
the Illustration dealt with all the subjects of current events, that it is in the political arena, economic, social, scientific, artistic or sporting. Its trademark was, as its name indicates it, a rich person Iconographie with each number (engravings, photographs, drawings,…)
Inter alia, the newspaper published signed weekly articles Tom Tit , pseudonym of Arthur Good under the title amusing Science .
I remember the old numbers of the Illustration, Georges Perec, I remember, 16.
