The intrigue of the novel
The history occurs in India, little time after the Révolte of Cipayes whose memory is at the origin of the intrigue.The colonel reprocesses Edward Munro of it lives with Calcutta in the memory of lost happiness, his young Laurence wife having disappeared at the time of the perpetrated massacres with Cawnpore by the troops from an indigenous chief, enemy relentless of the British, Nana Sahib. Since this episode, one lost the trace of Chick Sahib, refugee with the Nepal and whose rumor of death circulated. In fact, he did not die and the authorities of Bombay even announced its presence: he works in fact to cause a new revolt.
The friend of Munro, the engineer in railroads Banks, proposes to him to make a pleasure trip in India of north in an extraordinary vehicle which it designed and built for the Maharajah of Bhutan and which it could at low prices repurchase after the death of the silent partner.
It is about a gigantic elephant with vapor drawing two coaches from any comfort and which rolls without needing railway. This train is even amphibious. Munro gives its agreement and they leave, accompanied in particular by their friends, a French guest, Mauclerc, and the captain Hod, large hunter of tiger S. By including there the personnel necessary, they are ten people who travel towards the Himalayan buttresses.
After a first part of voyage without stories, Steam House - it is the name given to surprising attachment - arrives at Allahabad and with Cawnpore or Munro, arrival to visit the places of the old tragedy, learns that Nana Sahib is sought by the authorities. However, this last was informed as of their passage to Vârânasî of the voyage undertaken by Munro and its companions.
It dedicates to this one a wild hatred since its amante, the Rani of Bhopal, was killed out of the own hand of the British officer. He wants thus to be avenged some and dépèche his faithful henchman, named Kalagani, by entrusting the mission to him of approaching Munro in order to deliver this last to him.
However, Steam House takes again its road towards north and, arrived in a region favorable to hunting at the tiger, settles in camping for several months. During this stay, its occupants will bind knowledge with a Dutchman negotiating in deer named Matthias van Guitt which is there to capture the large deer that it will sell with the zoos and the menageries of Europe. Among the personnel of van Guitt is Kalagani which managed to be made engage.
Kalagani acquires the confidence of colonel Munro after him providentially to have saved the life. By trick, he arrives even so that Matthias van Guitt and its personnel unite with the train of Munro and its friends when this one, leaving the camping, goes down again towards the south where Munro is well decided to find and punish Nana Sahib.
