The Host is a South Korean film of Bong Joon-Ho left in November 2006. This film is largest South Korean success in term of audience with 13 million entries, exceeding recent the the Clown and the King which added up 12,3 million of them. This film partly draws its inspiration from a real event.
Synopsis
With Seoul, a watery monster generated by the toxic rejections of the American army sows panic and removes the Hyun-seo young person. The family of Hyun-seo decides to leave to her research…
Political dimension
Questioned by the magazine " Première" , the realizer Bong Joon-Ho recognizes the character protestor of film while hoping that " it is not an anti-américain" film;.
The film was thus greeted in North Korea like a criticism against the presence of American troops in South Korea.
In fact, the narration embroiders starting from a real accident, which has occurred in 2000. Thus, the film encouraged the ecologists of the South to require an investigation into pollution caused of the country by American military bases. Albert McFarland, a mortician working for the American forces in Korea which would have ordered in 2000 the discharge of formaldehyde in the river Han which crosses Seoul, had been condemned to two years of suspension and put in release on bail.
Metaphors
More than one critical of the American military presence in South Korea, it would seem that the film is clearly with double reading. Although difficult to perceive without preparation, several elements can be emphasized. Some in the disorder:- the d'" term; agent jaune" would refer to the " orange Agent " , a Carcinogenic Defoliant and Teratogenic persistent used massively by the American army during the War of Vietnam and, it is a subject more discussed, during the Guerre of Korea.
- the similarity of form enters the diffuser of the yellow agent and the first integral sight of the monster itself, suspended under a bridge (to fight the evil by the evil?).
- the American officer turning one moment his camera in direction of a group of demonstrators have just inhaled yellow agent and by undergoing the consequences (evocation of the experiments " scientifiques" doubtful having always accompanied the wars?).
- the history of the character of Hyun-seo is not without pointing out the fate of two 14 years South Korean schoolgirls, Semi-seon Shim and Shin Hyo-sun, crushed the June 13rd 2002 by an armoured tank of the American army, an accident which caused violent anti-American demonstrations in South Korea.
- the character of Nam-ju, malchanceuse champion of shooting to the arc which ends up taking its revenge by facing the monster, evokes the dispute between the South Korea and the the United States following the race of the 1500 meters in Shorts-track at the time of the Winter Olympics of 2002 with Salt Lake City. The South-Korean Kim Dong-sung, who had crossed the finishing line in first, was disqualified to have obstructed the American Apolo Anton Ohno who gained finally the gold medal. Dissatisfaction was such as in 2003, for safety reasons, Ohno could not come in South Korea to take part in the competitions cash for the World cup of Shorts-track. In 2005, the South Korean anti-riot police force had to be spread with the International airport of Incheon to ensure the safety of the sportsman.
