the horse come from the sea ( Into the west ) is an Irish film of Mike Newell turned in 1992 and left in 1994 in France. The scenario was written by Jim Sheridan, according to the novel of Michael Pearce.

Synopsis

Papa Reilly is a traveller, an Irish nomad which decides sédentariser in the suburbs of Dublin to the death of his wife. Alcoholic, it lives in a great poverty with his two sons, Ossie and Tito. One day, Ward, his/her wandering and alive father-in-law remained as the remainder of the family in a caravan, arrives, accompanied by a white Cheval named Tír Na nÓg (Ground of eternal youth in gaélic) which is according to him more than one animal…

The children, of which is seriously sick, and the horse become friendly. They decide to lodge it in the apartment. Because of a véreux police officer, the horse is removed with the profit of an owner of stud farm. The children release it, flee with him and thus cross all the country. Follows a track race between the police officers who seek the animal, the travellers which seek the children, and the three friends who hopelessly try to escape the prosecutors.

Analyzes

This talking film with brilliance about the nomads the Travellers , rejected by the current society: their refusal of the property and the attachment, the importance of the oral culture make them the marginal ones. In addition, it can emphasize the imaginary one of the two brothers, marked by the Western S and the myth of the Far West (from where the original title of film and the book Into the West ).

Finally let us not forget only this film places itself in the register of the tale, in particular thanks to the unfoldings and with substitutions of characters: Ossy has its double in the legend of Oisin told by the grandfather, and the horse has its double (or is a reincarnation?) in the character of the mother.

In short, this film is a search: that of Ossie which is in the search of its past, of his/her too young died mother and leaving it only; and that of his/her father who must find his dignity lost in alcohol, to release themselves from the culpability of the death of its wife, to accept her death and especially to find its nomadicity.
