the Hope is a novel written by André Malraux which is appeared in December 1937 with the Gallimard editions: he reports the beginning of the Guerre of Spain.

Summary

The Hope insists on the training of the republican movements, Communists, anarchists and (minoritairement) catholic of left. It is divided into three parts entitled: Apocalypse of fraternity, Manzanarès and the Hope. There the hope shows us this idea with the civil war that there was in Spain with the Franco general.

Malraux made of it a film in 1939, left in 1945: Hope .

Main characters

  • Manuel can be regarded as the main character of the novel. It is a former sound engineer, now member of the Communist party. With the opening of the novel, it is not fully engaged in the action, it is still rather individualistic. Little by little it makes the difficult training of the command and the responsibilities which it involves.
  • Magnin is probably the character in whom Malraux put more itself. Although the bibliographical details do not correspond (Magnin is a former engineer), the part which he plays in the war strongly points out that of Malraux: as him it from France to direct a flotilla of international aviators. But it is also insofar as he is an intellectual divided between the attachment with the values which he came to defend and the need for an effective combat which he points out Malraux. The melancholy which it expresses towards the end of the novel seems the result of the various dilemmas which structure the novel. This character is carrying the whole of these tensions, just like the novelist, and it makes the same choice as him: that of the action.
  • Sils, called Négus is carrying the anarchistic values in the novel. It is a proletarian who was implied in the past in violent political actions which were worth several years of prison to him. Its mistrust, and even its dislike towards any form of discipline are highlighted. He regards the order and the hierarchy as fascistic values, and estimates, like the other anarchists, whom one must be distinguished from his enemies until in the way of living. If one into practice does not put at the time even of the confrontations the values for which one fights, then the combat is stripped of direction.
  • Garcia and Scali is two intellectuals.
  • Ximénès is the chief of the civil guard, rejoined with the Republicans. Its men call it the Old Duck.
  • Ramos is a Communist militant.
  • Heinrich is a republican general.
