The Hell of the zombies
the Hell of the zombies ( Zombi 2 ) is an Italian film carried out by Lucio Fulci, left in 1979.
Synopsis
Following the discovery of an abandoned boat sailing, of the police officers go up on board, but are made attack by a sanguinary creature which resists the balls, then plunges in water.
The girl of the owner of the boat thus inquires with a journalist into a track which carries out them on a tropical island infested with death-alive.
History
A yatch drift in the wearing of New York. The coastguard goes up on the boat and vacuum discovers it. On board, a broken up man cuts the throat of a police officer in the cockpit, before the second police officer succeeds in making it pass over edge by drawing it above.
An young girl, Anne (Stoked Farrow), is questioned by the police force when this one discovers that the boat belongs to his/her father. Anne can nothing say on what occurred, except the fact that his/her father left on a tropical island to make research. Peter West (Ian McCulloch), a journalist, is sent by his chief (Lucio Fulci, in an appearance) to inquire. After being itself met on the boat, they find a note saying that it is on the island of Matoul, which is in prey with an unknown disease. In the tropics, the couple engages a couple of holiday makers, Brian (Al To cleave) and Susan (Auretta Gay), to lead them on Matoul.
On Matoul, Doctor Ménard (Richard Johnson) carries out his experiments. Matoul is a cursed place where deaths rise to attack the alive ones. The two couples, isolated on Matoul, are recovered by Ménard which explains the situation to them.
In the one day space, all the inhabitants of the island (without exception) are victims of thealive ones. Only Peter escape from it and Anne, Susan being victim of the zombies and Brian, infected, will die on the boat before being also raised him in zombie.
At sea, they learn that the phenomenon of death-alive is not that local, but was spread in New York and all America via the first zombie, fallen to water, and that the situation is desperate on the world plan.
Comment
This film is very dark. The music (of which the topic of opening is outstanding) is favourable with environment. For Fulci, the zombie draws the roots in the West-Indian voodoo to be propagated universally, contrary to the majority of the films of this period which do not give explanation on the phenomenon.
The success of this film is due as much to the phenomenon of death-alive film which broke with the 1980 qu beginning of the year ' with the violence of its scenes gores. Violence which was worth with this film several prohibitions (in particular in the United Kingdom, Germany or Norway), so that the main actor Ian McCulloch, of British origin, could not see it before the recent comment for the exit in DVD of film.
On the other hand, the international title of Zombie 2 was badly chosen, the action being held before the Zombie (Dawn ofthe Dead) of George A. Romero. Fulci has famous this film to benefit from the success of Zombie, left one year before. This film nevertheless garnered 30 million dollars of receipts.
Scenes gores
Except the special effects carried out very well of this film (bites, trepanation…), two scenes were shocking and innovating for the time:
- the first is a combat submarine between a zombie and a shark off the island of Matoul.
- the second is the enucleation of Paola the woman of Doctor Ménard, very slow and very painful scene.
The scene of the eye was so much shocking that the totality of the televised diffusions and the quasi-majority of the distributions in cassette were censured.
