The Guide of the galactic traveller

the Guide of the galactic traveller (original Title: The Hitchhiker' S Guides to the Galaxy , literally Guide of the hitch-hiker for the galaxy ) is the first volume of the pentalogy H2G2, imagined by Douglas Adams. He was written in 1979 and was translated into French by Jean Bonnefoy in 1982.

The title French original was: Guide of the galactic routard , but the editor of a similar guide of name asked to adopt a title not interfering with his, which was deposited. Several thousands of specimens were however published under this abandoned title. Up to 2005, work named the galactic Guide , before being renamed after the exit of the film.

Synopsis

Arthur Tooth, average English citizen, attends the destruction of the Ground by the Vogon S in order to create a way express hyperspatiale, and is saved by his/her friend Ford Prefect, who is in fact originating in Bételgeuse, and which takes it along with him in astrostop through the Galaxie. The two friends are finally recovered by the vessel Cœur out of Gold, stolen little of time before by Zaphod Beeblebrox, president of the galaxy and his assistant Trillian.

To guide itself, they have with them a specimen of the Guide of the galactic traveller , kind of Guide of routard for the galaxy, famous for its sentence of cover: No Panic .

In this novel, one learns in particular the answer to the Great Question about the Life, the Universe and the Remainder.

Anecdotes

  • This book is a reference for many Informaticien S, inter alia.
  • According to this book, the answer to “the Life, the Universe and the Remainder” is 42 (one does not know the question). That gives place often to sentences of the kind “the answer is 42” on the forums of data processing.
  • According to the Guide, the knowledge of the Great Question about the Life, the Universe and the Remainder as its answer would involve the total and immediate annihilation of the universe so that this one is replaced by something of much stranger and is complicated. According to certain sources, the event would have already occurred.
  • an important practical advice given by the Guide is to have always with oneself a bath towel. It allows indeed, in addition to all its optional uses, to show to people whom one meets that one has an irreproachable hygiene and thus a priori in good provisions with respect to the foreign traveller puts (always the object of prejudices in addition).
