The Guardian is a Quotidien of British information. It belongs to the “press of quality”, in opposition to the Tabloïd S, and has a leading line of left center . The newspaper shelters some of the most respected chroniclers country, such as Hugo Young, Jonathan Freedland, Madeleine Bunting and Polly Toynbee.
In 1921, C.P. Scott founds the Manchester Guardian and Evening News Limited . Its death in 1932, its sons, John and Edward, succeed to him, but Edward dies the same year. This disappearance encourages his/her brother to found, in 1936, a trust of shareholders to guarantee the perenniality of the company if it itself has suddenly died.
The Guardian is characterized by a will of freedom and independence, with the risk to run up against its assistantship. Thus, in 1956, one year after being become daily, it criticizes the Eden government violently at the time of the Crise of Suez Canal, which involves the cancellation of many subscriptions. In 1979-1980, it benefits largely from the eleven months crisis which The Times knows, which ceases appearing for this period. If the positions of The Guardian as regards foreign policy are done more moderate as at the time of the Conflit of the Falklands, it is the only press agency of quality to invite to vote for the Workers party English in 1987.
Since 1990, a European edition of The Guardian exists, made up of 24 pages and sold in 16 country of Europe, like in Israel: it contains articles of the London drafting and translations resulting from articles of European newspapers, among which Le Monde . The pulling of The Guardian is assembled to 400 000 specimens.
While being close to the members of the Labor Party, it remains very critical with respect to the government of Tony Blair.
Before the foundation of The Independent , it was the only daily newspaper a long time to introduce to a leading line pro-member of the Labor Party. The Guardian is thus famous being the newspaper of reference of the Intelligentsia, the teachers and the trade unionists, especially in London. So much so that when the conservatives want to qualify somebody of “intello of left”, they say that it is a “reader of the Guardian ”.
