The Godz

Two rock groups were called The Godz . The first date of the Years 1960 and comes from New York. The second of 1976 and plays of the Hard-rock. It is first about which we will speak here.

The Godz is an avant-gardist rock group, with the spirit close to the dadaïstes. Although definitely less known than the Velvet Underground, it is about the one of the great figures of the New Yorkean experimental rock'n'roll, and for this reason the ancestors of the No wave, Sonic Youth etc

Formed in 1965 per Jay Dillon, Larry Kessler, Jim McCarthy and Paul Thornton, Godz leave their first album, the cultissime Contact High With The Godz in 1966, at ESP-Disk, recording company considered to leave a total freedom to the artists. It had already with its credit of the discs free jazz of Ornette Coleman, Pharoah Sanders, Sun Ra, Albert Ayler… It will be also the recording company of the Fugs, of the Holy Modal Rounders, Pearls Before Swine.

This first album of Godz immediately obtains the reputation to be the most atrocious disc of the rock'n'roll of all times. It should be said that, if one sticks to the traditional criteria, the group cannot play. The guitatres are désaccordées, the primitive compositions, and they sing very badly.

The disc contains a succession of pieces folk, decorated of a harmonica, of a plastic flute, low, a banjo… according to mood. On instrumental the " Squeak" , one hears even a violin very squeaking and some tribal rates/rhythms of batteries, and that several months before the first album of the Velvet Underground. The words often consist of a word, a sentence, even of the growls. The unit is played with a certain frantic jubilation and the group finally manages to create funny songs and sometimes really envoûtantes (" Eleven").

With the passing, it appears that this album precedes all at the same time the Punk that the Lo-fi, even the Anti-folk. One thinks as well of the Shaggs as with Pavement.

, In 1967, Godz 2 appears then . This time, the sound of the group is electrified on several pieces, and a song like " Radar eyes" brings closer to the rock'n'roll garage, worthy of compilations " Nuggets" (13th Floor Grain elevators, The Seeds…) It is an album chaotic, delirious and psychedelic. In the notes of small pocket, a small definite data base style of Godz: " Tribal organic music". A disc to be arranged beside Trout Mask Replica of Captain Beefheart.

Jay Dillon leaves the group in 1968. The three resquapés record nevertheless The third will. Following the example Red Crayola on The parable off arable Land , Godz open the doors of the studio to their friends, who accompany them with all kinds of instruments on several pieces, under the name of " The Multitude" or " The Dogz". " The first multitude" is particularly incredible. The album proposes also strange songs folk and some other bizarreries (like enumerating the alphabet with a word conrespondant with each letter, or imitating cries of animals).

In 1973, the group records an ultimate album: Godzundheit .

Worship and ignored, Godz are the proof that one can make rich and enthralling albums, without having any technical training. To tell the truth, that even undoubtedly helped them. Their songs folks, their improvisations and experiments, preserved an astonishing freshness, a marvellous insolence. Lester Bangs was fan.
