the French House is a center of the French Culture with the Université of New York ( New York University , or NYU ). Located at the north of Washington Public garden Park, it was founded in 1957. It regularly organizes conferences, courses, projections, exposures and concerts. It is reserved only to the students, but for all the New Yorkeans. Since its foundation, the French House is the most active center of the country on the cultural exchanges and intellectuals between France and the United States.

Structure

The French House occupies a red brick masonry dating from the 19th century. Inside, the living room of the ground floor is sufficiently vast to accommodate events there. It can thus accommodate exposures of art, receptions, conferences and projections, with a capacity of one hundred places.

Activities

The program of the activities of the French House covers a broad spectrum of subjects. It includes/understands conferences, symposiums, debates, video projections, exposures, concerts, plays… These events, which for the majority free and are opened with the public, are focused on various aspects of civilization and culture Frenchwomen (and French-speaking people), current and passed. Beyond the public of the University of New York, the French House also accommodates business men, members of government and professionals.

During the few last years, a series of conferences gathered a group of eminent international specialists. Among these events, one in particular could be interested in a vision of the French Theory in America, in an introduction to the French Thought, with discussions on the interbreeding, the hyperrealism with the theater, the surrealism of the exile and the work of Sartre. Contemporary novelists and American translators introduced seven their foreign colleagues during an event over two days: a new generation of French female authors. With the autumn 1997, the season began with a festival of the French book, with conferences, readings, an important exposure of recent French books.

Although the program of the French House supplements and enriches those by the French Department and the Institute of the French Studies, its mission also consists with the transverse interests between the various departments of the Faculté of Arts and Sciences and between the various schools of the university. Among recent collaborations, one can quote one weekend devoted to projections and debates with Chantal Akerman around the topic of the heritage of the Affaire Dreyfus. There exist also collaborations with organizations external to the university, of which the International Conference on the Trade and Computer security (" International Cyberlaw and Conference" Business;).
