History and engagements
the Free English Channel is a Norman Hebdomadaire regional of general information. Its creation, in 1944, by the saint-laws Joseph Leclerc, is encouraged by the prefect Edouard Lebas. It quickly occupies most of open space left by the disappearance of the local weekly magazines published before the Second world war. In the years 1945-1970, its pulling oscillates between 50000 and 55000 specimens, distributed as follows (1947):-

- edition of Avranches: 10000
- edition of Mortain: 8500
After one period of support very Net for MRP, the newspaper attenuates its political commitments, while remaining close the local line, in its components Christian-Democrat and gaullist. It is also an enthusiastic support of the agricultural movement of modernization in guaranteed as from the years 1950 around JAC, and of the labor-union movements and co-operative agricultural.
the Free English Channel remains one of rare independent of France, having its own printing works, its radio (Western Tendency), its advertizing agency and its distribution network. It does not have a board of directors and no trade union is known in the company. The founder, Joseph Leclerc separated from the trade union of the Book for his printing works.
At the time of the presidential election of 2007, the owner of the newspaper invited to vote for Nicolas Sarkozy and at the local level, in Saint-Lo, he preferred to support François Brière in Philippe Gosselin, which gained nevertheless the station of deputy with 57.71% of the voices.
Diffusion
The diffusion of the Free English Channel , first regional weekly magazine of France, is in constant progression. The title received star of OJD for its progression of the sales in absolute value + 1.452 ex (figures 2004).
It prints six editions in the English Channel: the edition of Avranches, the edition of Granville, the edition of Coutances, the edition of Cherbourg, the edition of Saint-Hilaire-of-Harcouët the and the edition of Saint-Lo. It is also present in the Apple-brandy, thanks to the editions of Bessin (Bayeux) and the Scrap-metal (Transfers) respectively called Bessin Libre and the Free Scrap-metal . The Center-Handle is the most solid storage area of the newspaper, because historical. It undergoes there only the competition of the daily newspaper Ouest-France . It must on the other hand face the weekly magazine the Gazette of the English Channel in Avranchin and Mortanais (Publihebdos group), and especially, in Cotentin, with the daily and Sunday editions of the Press of the English Channel . It is composed of general an information part and magazine printed in large size, commune with all the editions, of a book " Small annonces" with the format tabloïd, as of a book of local pages specific to each edition (of about thirty in 72 pages) which is him also with the format tabloïd. Each week, TV magazine is distributed with the Free English Channel (1,10 euro).
Since the edition of May 26th, 2007, the model of the newspaper was remodifiée following the adoption of a new rotary printing-press doubles width Goss Uniliner which makes it possible to print the newspaper color completely. A Free P' tite Manche intended for the children from now on is located inside the book " Small annonces". Since this date, the book " Sports" is detached from the local book (which always gathers the " Facts divers"). In May 2007, the Free English Channel received two stars of OJD (+ 1.095ex in 2006 and more strong progression in absolute value over five years (+ 5.130 e.g.).
The summer 2007 is marked by a drama for the newspaper with the death of Cédric Gauthier, journalist in limited time contract. It had been asked to him to take a photograph of work to Western Tendance , the radio which Benoît Leclerc has, and the 26 year old young man made a fall of 10 meters.
