Clint Mansell, the type-setter of two preceding films of Aronofsky, pi and Requiem for has Dream , taken again its role of type-setter for The Fountain . The Kronos Four-bit byte, which had also taken part in the original soundtrack of Requiem for has Dream , and groups it Scottish Post-rock'n'roll Mogwai also contributed to the original soundtrack of film. Darren Aronofsky hoped that David Bowie, of which the song " Space Oddity " have a great influence on the futuristic part of film, would have recorded a song for film while he briefly worked with Clint Mansell during the production. Its hope was to work again and make sing by Bowie of the parts of the original soundtrack, however that was not carried out. Mansell then sought sonorities which could bind together the three periods of film. Its wish was to create an organic feeling and he thought of adding orchestral and electronic elements. The music was carried out in same time as the production of film, and not during the post-production. Mansell created an environment which flowers while the film progresses.
The writing of the music of The Fountain was spread out over five to six years. Initially, the type-setter wished to use only percussions when the film was still supposed to have a epic scale. Mansell, lack formation for the classical music, collaborated with an assistant for the creation of the music. They rebuilt the initial pieces together and rejouèrent them so that the melodies can follow the progression of film harmoniously. The title " Together We Will Live Forever" was an electronic piece created by Mansell to accompany the scenes where the hero reminds his past. The singer Antony Hegarty was called to create a vocal piece starting from " Together We Will Live Forever" for the music of end, but the realizer decided that a sung piece would not be adapted for the end of film. The title in the place was rejoué with the pianist Randy Kerber.
Clint Mansell was named in 2006 with the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score for The Fountain but lost with the profit of Alexandre Desplat for the Veil of the illusions ( The Painted Veil ). Mansell was also named the same year with the BFCA Critic' S Choice Award for Best Composer, but also lost vis-a-vis Philip Glass for The Illusionist . Lastly, Mansell gained, always in 2006, the reward of Chicago Film Critics Association for the best original soundtrack.
