the Foundry is an old industrial district of Mulhouse, located at the west of the central station and downtown area.

It owes its name with the establishment, starting from 1826, of an important site of mechanical engineering by the industrialist André Koechlin, creator of the company André Koechlin and Compagnie (ancestor of SACM and Alsthom).
De these factories left the first Alsatian engines, which explains the establishment, in margin this site installed not far from the Canal of the Rhone to the Rhine then skirted by the railway line Mulhouse-Thann, of the first Mulhousian station (1839).
Faubourg industrial and working, the district which borders the industrial site preserved its popular character.

Completely given to nine, the large industrial building called the " Cathédrale" accommodate since September 2007 the new university campus of the Foundry, extension of the Université of High-Alsace which includes/understands the Faculty of Economic scenes, Sociales and Legal (FSESJ) of Mulhouse, first establishment of higher education of the Haut-Rhin of many students, but also the University center of Training of the Teachers and the Trainers (CUFEF). The campus shelters also a new college library, a university canteen as well as university residences.

The new campus was inaugurated by the president Nicolas Sarkozy on September 6th, 2007.

Concept of covered campus

With the Foundry, Mulhouse inaugurates the concept of covered campus. The campus being based on the architecture of an immense worked over again industrial building, it is primarily an interior campus.

The buildings distribute on three street interiors called " Street Principale" , " Street Droite" and " Street Gauche". Only the buildings with use of student residences are outside.

Safety

The campus of the Foundry is the establishment of the protected higher education of Alsace and undoubtedly of France. The access strongly is restricted there and controlled.

All the students must be provided with a magnetic badge which identifies them to reach the campus. Only the students of the FSESJ, the CUFEF and the teaching personnel is authorized to penetrate there without special permit of the direction or the security service.

The students of the Campus of Illberg, forming however part of the same university, must thus ask for an authorization to penetrate in the campus.

Internet networks are accessible there only by code and navigation is controlled there even with the use of a private computer. Many rooms are accessible only by badge.

A security service especially devoted to the FSESJ quadille the interior of the building and judged control any person supecte. The municipal police carries out many rounds there on the outsides parts. The opening hours of the building to the public are dependant on the hours of presence of the security service. The campus is thus often inaccessible to the students.

Cultural aspect

The Foundry also accommodates a center of art as well as the municipal files.

Population

Homis the population coed, 3.338 inhabitants reside in this district emblematic of the Mulhousian past.
