The war memorial of the Forest-of-Temple in the Hollow one is to our knowledge the only one to commemorate a Femme. On the place, in front of the building of the schools and the town hall, a stele of blue Granite is drawn up on a base with double base. Four stones of angle connected by iron grids encircle the building. On the principal face, the epigraph “with the heroes of the Forest-of-Temple died for the fatherland” challenges the passers by. On the two side faces one can read the names of the twenty-five victims. But the originality of the monument is concealed taking into consideration passer by. In February 1921 is made up, in front of notary in Paris, a Foundation Emma Bujardet, by Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Bujardet, her husband. This foundation equips the commune of 1000 F of revenue to carry out a monument with the natives died for France and to help the orphans and the war veterans of the Forest-of-Temple. Alexandre Bujardet was born in the commune in 1857, but it is one of these Creusois assembled to Paris where it made fortune as manufacturer of chemicals. He lays down conditions with this donation. That figure on the building: names of its three sons, Fernand (death in 1915), Rene (killed in 1916), Maurice (killed in 1917), that of his nephew Marcel (death in 1915), that finally of his wife Emma Marie Antonia Bujardet, born Guillot, died of sorrow in 1917 after the loss of its three sons.

The municipality accepts the donation and opens a public subscription in parallel to supplement it. She requests on this occasion the opinion of the inhabitants on the wish of Bujardet. On the 98 givers, only one refuses “the inscription of the Bujardet woman”. Alexandre Bujardet will be, more than the municipality, the true project superintendent of the construction of the monument whose final cost (15 500 F) proves to be three times superior with the amount of the subscription. Inaugurated on May 25th, 1922, in the presence of many elected officials creusois, the originality of the monument causes revealing movements of mentalities of the time. In January 1922, the president of the Association of the War veterans of Hollow announces to the mayor of the Forest-of-Temple the agitation caused in the world of the War veterans by the inscription of the name of a woman on a monument reserved and raised with the memory of the dead children for France. “I do not think that despite everything the merit which can be allotted to the lady in question, it can deserve this glorious title”, he and of advising with the commune writes a simple plate affixed with the town hall.

The mayor answers him that the name of Emma Bujardet appears among the four Bujardet died for France and that this inscription was made by the unanimous will of its fellow-citizens.

The memory of Mrs. Bujardet also makes it possible to register this monument in the list of the War memorials pacifist.
