the Flavigny-on-Moselle is a common French, located in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle and the area Lorraine.

History

the Flavigny-on-Moselle is formed of the meeting of several small villages called formerly: low city, new city and corridor (today priory). New the, Low one and Upper town go back to one extremely distant time. Typically Lorraine village, bordered by the Moselle, the Flavigny-on-Moselle can be also enorgueillir of a past and a rich inheritance with the Priory of the Benedictines; the oldest monument cenobitic of the area, resulting from a barn created into 952 is the most outstanding trace with its cloister, its tower, its vault of ogival style blazing and its various dependences. The Priory existed already at the 10th century, based by Beranger, Évêque of Verdun, which had a right high, average and low justice on its subjects. It has a mill and holds the right-of-way on the Moselle. The inhabitants of Flavigny have " grinding franche" and free passage. With the passing of years, follow one another Haraucourt, Antoine, Charles and Paul, Erard de Pulligny. And in 1650, prince Charles of Lorraine, future Charles. He is nine years old and resides at Vienna when he is named abbot of Senones, of Moyenmoutier, Saint-Pierremont and Prior of Flavigny. Flavigny counts some large priors:

  • Barthélémy de Lucy makes build the new church of the Priory, which one can still see nowadays, perfect counterpart of the vault of the cordeliers of Nancy, the old one having been extremely abused by the Burgundian ones in 1477;

  • Its successor Vary de Lucy (1509-1567) equips the church with splendid stained glasses sold in 1904 to private individuals;
  • Dom Charles Noirel (1692-1710) made build the beautiful interior cloister;
  • Dom Charles Cachedenier de Vassimont (1712-1733) is an administrator skilful and reconciling, " the monks are happy and the farmers do not make any difficulty to pay their royalties;
  • Dom Remi Storeroom (1733-1761), philosophical scientist and theologist, receives from His Eminence the Imperiali cardinal of Rome the remainders crowned of Holy Highly skilled in thanks of its work " General History of the Crowned Authors and Ecclésiastiques" dedicated to the cardinal.

In 1789, the Priory is taken in the revolutionary upheaval. July 30th, the inhabitants of Flavigny threaten to be caught some with the buildings if they do not obtain the titles of the rights that the Benedictines have on them. The prevented army stops several revolted and imprisons them: the two chiefs are hung in Nancy, on August 3rd.

In 1790, the goods of the Priory are confiscated with the profit of the Nation and the eleven monks present leave the convent. The goods of the community are sold to an understanding purchaser, who had in heart to maintain the buildings to preserve them.

In 1824, the last abbess of Saint-Eustase of Vergaville, the Moselle and some sisters, solicited by the Baillard priest, settled with the Priory which they had repurchased with the Bernier heirs. The nuns founded a flourishing boarding school of young girls.

November 11th, 1904, Bénédictines were expelled of their convent pursuant to the decrees of proscription against the religious congregations. The Priory was repurchased by Mr Emile Culot, grandfather of Mr Pierre Thidric. Requisitioned by the army during the Great War, the monastery was transformed into general headquarter and sheltered the Staff of the 8th Army. Returned peace, Mrs Thidric yielded in 1921 the Priory to Gustave Simon, former Mayor of War of Nancy. This one, in its turn, yielded it, in 1922, with the Senior Jacques Parisot eager to make an observation sanatorium of children of it. Thanks to a gift of an American rich person and with various financial contests, the Office of Social Hygiene could acquire this antique foundation bénédictine. Since 1925 was established in the Flavigny-on-Moselle an observation sanatorium of 400 beds for firstly-infected children. Practically overcome tuberculosis, the epidemic of poliomyelitis gives birth to a center from readjustment for physical handicapped people managed jointly by the O.H.S and the C.R.A.M. of the North-East.
