The First Century after Beatrice
the First Century after Beatrice is the title of a Romance of the writer Lebanon board in French language Amin Maalouf. It was published in 1992.
Argument
The protagonist of the novel, a entomologist French and his Clarence partner denounce the existence of a " substance" who is sold with certain countries of the Tiers-monde and who makes that those which take it can have boys instead of girls. This situation repeating itself on several occasions and with various parts of planet, the company can disappear.Beatrice, the girl of the couple will be used to mark the continuation of the events.
Style
With its particular style and its sharp language, Maalouf proposes a worrying assumption: mankind can disappear because the old prejudices make attach more importance to the male heritage. If the choice of the sex of the children can be made (or, for better saying, if the parents who prefer a boy have the choice, since the reverse does not occur), humanity plunges towards its destruction. It is about a novel particuler. After the historical study ( Leon the African and Samarkand ) Maalouf another point of view proposes to us. And a final assumption much more worrying than the first: to save humanity it will not be enough to stop the plagues in the countries of North. The misfortune of the South will arrive on our premises, before or afterwards.
