The Figure
the Figure is a Personnage of fiction created by Ian Fleming to be the malicious of its first novel of James Bond, Espions made your plays . The Figure was interpreted with the screen by Peter Lorre in a televised adaptation for CBS in 1954, by Orson Welles in the film " non-officiel" of 1967 and by Mads Mikkelsen in the adaptation " officielle" of 2006.
The name of the Figure comes owing to the fact that the character does not remember his true name.
In the novel
the Figure , alias " Die Number" , " The Number" , " Herr Ziffer" and other translations of " Chiffre" in various languages, is the treasurer of the " Trade union of the Workmen of Alsace" , controlled by SMERSH.
It is announced like prisoner to the camp of the displaced persons of Dachau in June 1945, then transferred to Strasbourg with a Passeport stateless person. It chooses the name of the Figure because is regarded as being “only one number on a passport”. In the novel, it makes a large investment in a chain of closed houses with money pertaining to the SMERSH. This investment is absorbed after the promulgation of the law Marthe Richard which closes the closed houses. The Figure goes to Royal-the-Water to try to recover its lost funds. Jump beats it with the baccara. The Figure removes the assistant of Jump, Vesper Lynd, to lead it in a trap and to recover its money. Captured, Bond is tortured by the Figure which strikes its Testicules with a queer with carpet to force it to reveal to him where is the money. In front of the determination of Jump to resist torture, the Figure leaves a knife with an implicit aim to castrate it. It is stopped by an agent of the SMERSH which assassinates it to have lost money. Torture briefly makes doubt Bond on its profession and Fleming plays with the idea to make him take its retirement until the end of the novel.
The death of the Figure embarrasses the government Soviet and, with the death of Mr. Big in Requins and secret services ( Vivre and to let die ), led to the events of Échec to the East-Express train ( Bons kisses of Russia ). In this novel, the SMERSH tries to be avenged by killing Bond and by erecting scaffolding a plot to embarrass the Intelligence Service in the community of the intelligence services.
