The Feast of Babette

the Feast of Babette ( Babettes Gaestebud ) is a Film Danish carried out by Gabriel Axel and left on the screens in 1987. It is inspired by a news of Karen Blixen.

Synopsis

Babette, cooker re-elected in a Parisian great restaurant, “the English Coffee”, flees the repression of the Commune of Paris in 1871. It finds refuge with the Denmark, in a small village, with the service of two old maids.

Every year it buys a lottery ticket. When it gains the first prize, at the end of fifteen years, instead of improving its fate, it devotes all its money to reconstitute, in only one evening and for twelve covers, the ostentation of the great Parisian kitchen.

Comment

It is the distinguished guest of the feast, the Löwenhielm general, who recognizes “ruails out of sarcophagus” of the " Coffee anglais" and which recalls that a great meal can be a history of love, while raising its glass to that of the two old maids that he always liked but that he could not marry. It is not a tender film but an upsetting film, thanks to the news of Karen Blixen whose Gabriel Axel realized the setting in admirable scene of precision and sobriety until in the details and this narcotic contrasts between the sad and miserable life of this disaster village Lutheran and this fantastic dinner, true vice of succulent mets and extraordinary wines, like CLOS VOUGEOT 1845, so perfectly unexpected in this austere Scandinavian landscape, icy and beaten by the winds. The wonder of film - indicated by the small speech of the general who concludes the dinner - is that it is the feast which achieves the communion of all the guests and the separate lovers that Pasteur had never realized - it had separated them for its own satisfaction. A very beautiful comment of the Feast of Babette can be read in the book of Brazilian the Rubem Alves published with the Editions of the Stag under the title: the Eater of words .
