Critical
Third album of Altaria, The Fallen Empire is regarded per many fans as more succeeded of the albums of the group. In spite of the departure of Jani Liimatainen with the beginning of the year 2005 because of its lack of time to be devoted to the group in parallel of Sonata Arctica, Altaria it is equipped with the perfect substitute: J-P Alanen, talented guitarist with the style very close to that of Jani without however copying it, which ensures a good transition after the departure from this last. One thus finds in many pieces a key very similar to that of Jani on Divinity, with once again of the fronts complexes alternating Power-chord, Palm transfers and Triade with very often of the judiciously inserted artificial harmonics. The various solos are very close musicalement to those which one can find in Divinity, with perhaps a little more technique and less felt, although that remains very good.
One will notice also the appearance of part acoustic et/où in his light, as in Frozen Heart with a front of intro in arpeggio in his clean and reverb, or in Access Denied with a intro to the Folk guitar. The title European no-claims bonus The Dying Flame also comprises a intro with the traditional guitar.
The keyboard takes an important place on this album or, following the example Nightwish or Sonata Arctica, he assumes the role of second guitar, with in particular of the passages of song without guitar, simply the keyboard in addition to the rhythm section.
