Situation in work
the Fall of Hypérion tells the arrival of the pilgrims (presented in the novel Hypérion) in the valley of the
Tombeaux of Time and their individual confrontation with the
Gritche. In parallel, the novel largely develops the political aspect and tactic of the war against Extros which prevails above Hypérion and extends unrelentingly to all Hegemony. After having been only one supporting character in Hypérion, the President Meina Gladstone takes in the
Chute of Hypérion all her political dimension and philosophical. Even if
daN Simmons summarizes during its account the events which proceeded in the preceding novel, it is desirable to approach the reading of this novel only after having done that of Hypérion which sets up the Univers of Cantos d' Hypérion and presents the Personnages of Cantos d' Hypérion.
Summary
The 6 pilgrims of Gritche settle in the valley of the
Tombeaux of Time , in spite of the discomfort of a camping subjected to the anentropic tides, the storms, the gusts of snow and the sandstorms which sweep the area regularly. Above their heads, the battle for Hypérion makes rage between the forces of Hegemony and the swarm of Extros, striating the sky with yellow or red stripes left by the weapons with plasma and the explosions. Each pilgrim awaits his painful confrontation with Gritche. During this time, the cybride Johnny Keats 2, which took the identity of the painter Joseph Severn, is called by the President of Hegemony, Meina Gladstone, to crunch its portrait. It thus attends all the meetings of staffs which draw up the assessments of the war against Extros, reveal the doubts of the President on her action and put into obvious the central role of the IA in military and political decision making. Whereas the war against Extros becomes unforeseen extensive, directly threatening a score of planets of Retz and putting in difficulty the defense forces of Hegemony, the mandate of the President Meina Gladstone is called into question by a growing number of senators. Little by little, the war against Extros proves to be the decisive phase of a complex machination which aims at exterminating humanity.
