History of the newspaper

The first number of the Express train appears on Saturday, May 16, 1953 like weekly supplement of the newspaper the Echoes. This newspaper is created by two journalists with the complementary talents: Francoise Giroud then direct of the drafting of the magazine It and Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber, former leader-writer with the World.

The Express train had the role to support Pierre Mendès France. the Express train was then considered to like youth for its positions anticolonialists. the Express train will be for example, one of the only French newspapers to denounce the torture practiced by part of the French Army during the Guerre of Algeria. Under the crook of Claude Imbert, which directs the drafting from there, the Express train becomes politically rather neutral even if Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber remains a political leader-writer near to center-left. An important crisis is born in 1971 when Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber becomes a politician of the Radical party valoisien. Part of the team of the journalists does not support a political supervision. Although Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber never intervenes directly with the drafting, it preserves a weekly leading article what carries to confusion. Claude Imbert will leave to found the Point with most of his drafting (Georges Suffert, Jacques Duquesne, Robert Franc…) and chair it group, Olivier Chevrillon. the Express train will become again a committed newspaper radicalizing itself against the gaullism and the gaullists whom incarnated then the President of the Republic Georges Pompidou and successors of the General.

Sold into 1977 to the financier Jimmy Goldsmith, the Express train changes leading orientation completely.

the Express train organizes every year a contest in partnership with French universities, aiming at carrying out local supplements with the weekly magazine. This event is known under the name of “Contest the Express train ”.

the Express train successively belonged to the group Alcatel, the Groupe Dassault, and since 2006 with the Belgian group Roularta. Its directors were Philippe Grumbach, Jean-François Revel (1978 - 1981), Christine Ockrent… Raymond Aron is leader-writer of 1977 there with 1983.
