Second world war, a man, travelling with a woman, is saved flames of its plane crashé by nomads of the
the Sahara. Given to Combined and seriously
flaring, it is unable to remember its identity and is registered under the name of “English patient”. To each displacement of the Canadian medical regiment which looks after it, this patient follows. Arrived in
Tuscan in 1944, one of the nurses, Hana, does not support any more to see friends dying and obtains from his superior the right to settle in a monastery given up to deal with the last days of the English patient.
Hana and its patient are joined by Caravaggio which affirms to deal with the relations between the Allies and resistant Italian and by two bomb disposal experts carried out by the lieutenant sikh Kip Singh. Each protagonist seeks to exorcize the phantoms created by the war. During the readings of Hérodote and the discussions with Caravaggio, the unknown reminds its life of before the war (in the form of '' flashbacks ).
He is the count László Almásy, an aviator with the service of archaeological forwardings in the desert of Libya, in which he takes part in the sides of British, in the years 1930. Until the day when the team is joined by the Clifton couple.
Comments
The count László Almásy existed and it is one of the discoverers of the oasis of Zerzura to the beginning of the year 1930. However, the chronology of these events, its connection with Katharine and its consequences concern the fiction necessary to film.
